Publisher's summary

Crime author Dick Markham is in love again; his fiancée, Lesley Grant, the mysterious newcomer to the village. When Grant accidentally shoots a fortune teller through the side of his tent at the local fair - following a very strange reaction to his predictions - Markham is reluctantly brought into a scheme to expose his betrothed as a suspected serial husband-poisoner. That night the enigmatic fortune teller - and chief accuser - is found dead in an impossible locked-room setup, casting suspicion onto Grant and striking doubt into the heart of her lover. Lured by the scent of the impossible case, Dr Gideon Fell arrives from London to examine the perplexing evidence and match wits with a meticulous killer at large.

Couldn't finish it

Slow story with over-the-top narration meant I had trouble going back to the book, until I decided to just abandon it.

Disappointing

I’d been looking forward listening to my first John Dickson Carr mystery, but this one did not live up to my expectations. The characters are uniformly uninteresting, especially the female characters, who are vapid and infantile. Even the great genius Dr. Fell failed to intrigue me. The mystery itself is compelling enough, but for me, the story must be woven around interesting and complex people for it to truly capture my imagination, and in this case it most certainly was not. The narration, however, was very good.

John Dickson Carr is a brilliant descriptive clever writer

I have such a difficult time finding a good writer now
I am so often disappointed
After having listened to the greatest of the golden age writers like Agatha Christie
Margery Allingham, Dorothy L Sayers,
Geogette Heyer (the funniest)
I am drawn in the story by his description of the characters and atmosphere
He has a gift
His us of the adjectives and adverbs to bring a story to life are superbly admirable
I can see Dr Gideon Fell with all of his bulk and wagging chins
What a great character
His plots are genius
And keep you guessing all along
Twisting and turning
I was a delicious privilege to be treated to such an adventure
The narrator is not the best but it doesn’t diminish the superlative nature of this work
