Publisher's summary

I wrote this book because it is the book that I needed when I started my journey to both understanding and overcoming my traumatic past. When I started I never expected what it would become.

The short version is this: I come from a dark place, my ACE score is 10, and I attempted to take my own life twice, not to mention being morbidly obese and a drug addict at 12 years old. Today, I am happy, healthy, and driven towards being my best self every day. Why? Because I choose to Think Unbroken.

I have taken the tools and science from countless hours and years of education, mentorship, therapy, trial and error, and plain and simple dedication to my health, and distilled them down into a palatable book that is less about my story, and more about how to change your mindset through real world exercises and understanding.

The world likes to label people who come from nothing as "broken". I don't believe that about trauma survivors. I believe that we simply have not had the right heroes and teachers to follow. We are not broken.

What started as a simple blog post has turned into a guide and dare I say a companion to be by your side as you walk into the depths of self-actualization and healing. I hope that you will find what I found in this book and that is hope, understanding, reflection, shift, honesty, and a spark.

The impact of childhood trauma and abuse can forever alter the course of history. Throughout generations, countless children have been hurt by those that are meant to care for them. Yet, in society once those children turn to adults the impacts of child abuse are often discounted and spoken to with the frame of "that was years ago” or “it’s time to get over it”. The reality is that we are at the core a collection of all of our experiences leading up to this very moment. If the childhood trauma survivor’s foundation is built atop a volcano, then sooner or later it will be engulfed. Childhood trauma and abuse is the elephant in the room.

A gift of brutal honesty, but I was ready.

The absolute irony of this is I am currently recovering from betrayal trauma. In addition to childhood physical/sexual/spiritual abuse and adolescent sexual assault, I’m less than a year into discovering my husband has had a sexual addiction for our entire 24 year marriage. Who would have thought that a guy with a crap ton of his own sexual issues could help me understand what I have been through can be overcome. I love how practical and specific he gets with the exercises. The mix of modalities and that Michael used is indicative of not only a VERY open mind, but so understanding that we are each massively different and that full healing WILL NOT COME without discovering and honoring who I really am. Thank you, Michael. I finally feel like there is a way out of this. God bless you! P.S. I AM a Christian, but man…. I can cuss. I found the raw language so freaking therapeutic!

No better work than working on yourself

Think Unbroken is full of great little self help tidbits. I really enjoyed hearing the author read his own book and tell his story to help others.

The message of failing, pushing yourself to get up and keep going is my favorite. The vortex metaphor is good too. It’s very relatable to trauma and the cycle you can get stuck in.

Overall I think this book can help a wide range of people with all different types of trauma scenarios. For instance my childhood trauma is very different than the authors and the message of the book resonates with me.

This book hurt my brain

Which is a good thing. I realize that my healing journey may never end which hurt when I read it in the book, but I know this a life time journey. This book helped me realize that yes I’ve gone through some really traumatic things but I’ve still here and I am resilient I stole your mantra and whenever negative thought arise I look back at my notes and go through the 4 steps to interrupt them. I scored a 9 on the A.C.E test smh and still am confused on how to feel again and trust again but I have taken a few of steps. I have begun therapy, I am journaling, and exercising, and I continue to read books to become more knowledgeable about trauma and how it is stored in my body. I know this journey that I am on will not only help me, but I truly feel I will be able to support others like me. Thank you Michael Anthony for being brave enough to put your life journey out there and I am grateful sir. Keep up the good fight 😍 Jeannette.

Survivor

This is the first book I have read that is extremely relatable to how I grew up. I also just started seeing a therapist at the age of 41 due to a lot of childhood trauma I had been suppressing all my life that all of a sudden came surging back. I also took the ACE test and scored a 10. Thank you for writing your story. I am in the beginning of my process and hope to get in a better place. I have work to do. Thank you again.
