Publisher's summary

The 13th novel of the Hugo-nominated, New York Times best-selling Toby Daye urban fantasy series!

Hundreds of years ago, the Selkies made a deal with the sea witch: they would have the sea for as long as she allowed it, and when the time came, she would call in all their debts at once. Many people assumed that day would never come. Those people were wrong.

When the Luidaeg - October "Toby" Daye's oldest and most dangerous ally - tells her the time has come for the Selkies to fulfill their side of the bargain, and that Toby must be a part of the process, Toby can't refuse. Literally. The Selkies aren't the only ones in debt to the Luidaeg, and Toby has to pay what she owes like anyone else. They will travel to the fabled Duchy of Ships and call a convocation of the Selkies, telling them to come and meet the Luidaeg's price...or face the consequences.

Of course, nothing is that simple. When Dianda Lorden's brother appears to arrest Dianda for treason against the Undersea, when a Selkie woman is stripped of her skin and then murdered, when everything is falling apart, that's when Toby will have to answer the real question of the hour.

Is she going to sink? Or is she going to swim?

Narrator is SO DRAMATIC!!!!

I have loved and listened to all of these books. The narrator has always been great but in this book her overly dramatic reading was a huge turn off! It’s a book not Broadway

Best one So far, BUT..

The narrator is fantastic yet again! the story is one of her best ones yet. however some of the new facts that were given bring up questions about former books

Another great book plus a short story!

This was another great addition to the series along with a wonderful short story from the perspective of Raj.

Amazing, like always

I won’t give away parts of the book but once again both Seanan McGuier and Robinette Kowal made an amazing work of art. I am also thrilled that the Novella is included in the audiobook version! That is my only disappointment in that I listen to the books vs read them is that I miss out on the Novellas at times.

I wanted more

I love the October Daye series however a part of me is ready for it to be wrapped up.
also the narrator in my opinion spoke in the upper register of her voice far too much and came off sounding supercilious.
as usual the setup for the next story was intriguing however I say again I feel as if it's being stretched out far too long I wanted more from this story it was good but it felt somewhat anaemic in spots but then that's just my humble opinion

Must READ--Great addition to series

The Unkindest Tide Bk 13.

We have waited some time for the book to come out, continuing us on October Daye's Journey. It does not disappoint and kept me glued to the storyline from beginning to end. A must read! October will pull off magic no one would have thought possible while being Hero of the Realm that she is ---Enjoy. I can't wait for Book 14.

Thank you's to Seanan McGuire and performance of Robinette Kowal as narrator. Applause to you both.

Always love the story, not so much the narration

I know people swear by the narrator for this series but, as has been mentioned in other reviews, the attempts to make it sound dynamic just result in high toned screechiness. I’m not sure if it’s getting worse with each book or if my patience for it is wearing ever more thin. I also agree with the reviews about character voices. I can live with the female characters but the male characters are really bad. Tybalt is almost ruined and Quentin & Raj are definitely ruined. Since it’s apparent that there won’t be a narrator change for this series, the only reason I’m posting this review is in the hopes that someone associated with the production of these audiobooks will address the feedback. Everyone who loves the narration won’t care if changes are made, so it can only help those who don’t if some of these tone/inflection issues were addressed. It might be hard to change a character’s voice this far into the series, so I hope they will consider at least toning down the descriptive/interior monologue sections. It’s so high and shrill that I can only listen at a distance (in the car), never directly (with earphones).
