Publisher's summary

London's East End, 1888. When darkness falls, terror begins.

The foggy streets of London's Whitechapel district have become a nocturnal hunting ground for Jack the Ripper, and no woman is safe. Flower girl Constance Piper is not immune to dread, but she is more preoccupied with her own strange experiences of late.

Clairvoyants seem to be everywhere these days. In desperation, even Scotland Yard has turned to them to help apprehend the Ripper. Her mother has found comfort in contacting her late father in a séance. But are such powers real? And could Constance really be possessed of second sight? She longs for the wise counsel of her mentor and champion of the poor, Emily Tindall, but the kind missionary has gone missing.

Following the latest grisly discovery, Constance is contacted by a high-born lady of means who fears the victim may be her missing sister. She implores Constance to use her clairvoyance to help solve the crime, which the press is calling "the Whitechapel Mystery", attributing the murder to the Ripper.

As Constance becomes embroiled in intrigue far more sinister than she could have imagined, assistance comes in a startling manner that profoundly challenges her assumptions about the nature of reality. She'll need all the help she can get - because there may be more than one depraved killer out there.

So good!

The story has a bit of a slow start, but once it takes off, it is hard to put down. Excellent readers, a compelling and vibrant story, and a surprising ending.

Pleasant surprise.

I stumbled across this book tucked away in the depths of the other titles in Audible. I was greatly surprised! I couldn’t wait to get back to it every chance I got. Definitely worth a listen.

I get the neg comments, but give this book a chance

This book had me confused at first. I was lost because it seemed to be all over the place and missing a storyline. That was because there was too much of the Jack the Ripper stuff involved. It is because of the poorly developed plot set up that I gave it 4 stars. You have to muddle through the set up, but once you do, you’ll start to enjoy the story. I thought the idea of using the Jack the Ripper events as a way to play and write a fictional tale was cool. I am sure the author was pulling her hair out meshing her story in with a real event.

Anyway… I liked it.

surprising ending

Reading is a little slow but good story. The development of the characters leaves you guessing.

Interesting idea but narration is off-putting

Both narrators use an overwrought exaggerated way of speaking (no matter which character) that made this book difficult to like.

Some twisty surprises

The reader did an excellent job not only with the voices, but with the dramatic intonations without being overdone. Characters are well created . The author weaves an entertaining and entrancing story from the viewpoint of various dickensian-type characters.
Moving around the period with an interesting blend of fiction and facts, Ms. Harris keeps you listening to the satisfying denouement.

Very odd story

if you like a book that keeps you guessing this is it. I enjoy this kind. I struggle to read predictable stories & this one definitely isn't.
I only gave it 4 stars because it wasn't a page turner but still interesting.

An interesting twist on the Ripper

The first person reading/narration takes a bit of getting used to but it comes together nicely in the end!
Tess Harris is a strong enough writer to pull off that and twist a plot.
