Publisher's summary

"Dana Stabenow excels at evoking the bleakness and beauty of the far north." (Seattle Times/Post Intelligencer)

Kate Shugak hires onto the staff of a political campaign to work security for a Native woman running for state senator. The candidate has been receiving anonymous threats, and Kate, who went to college with two of the staffers, is to become her shadow, watching the crowds at rallies and fund-raisers. But just as she's getting started, the campaign is rocked by the murder of their staff researcher. In order to track the killer, Kate will have to retrace the researcher's steps and delve into the past, in particular the grisly murder of a "good-time girl" during the Klondike Gold Rush of 1915. Little can she guess the impact a 90-year-old unsolved case could have on a modern-day psychotic killer....

Historical Significance

I enjoyed the way the historical prequel tied into the present day mystery in this book.

Kate at her best!

One of my favorite Kate Shugak novels. Dana Stabenow never disappoints! I have read and listened to all of the series. Well worth it!

Fantastic!

After spending months away, mourning the loss of Jack, Kate is back. So is Jack’s teenage son, who has run away from AZ to seek refuge w Kate. She takes a job guarding a campaigning politician, should be a breeze. Until death threats and dead bodies become a reality! Interspersed is the story of a saloon girl from the days of gold mine in the early 1900s. Very enjoyable.

Part of an outstanding series

The Kate Shugak series is a perpetual, and perennial, favorite with many readings and re-readings. While this is not my favorite in the series, it is an integral part of the historic picture of Alaska, which is always awesome.

Great book, but it is OLD!

The release date says 2020, but this is an old book. I have not listened to it before, but I thought I was getting the next in the series, not an old book. I hate it when I don't pay attention to the Book Number and purchase a book according to the release date. This happens a lot of the time. Don't try to make us purchase old books that we have already read by making it look as if they are new releases.
