Publisher's summary

Tarzan, after valiantly giving up the woman he loves to another man, leaves the deceitful world of civilization and returns to his beloved African jungle. Upon his return, buried in the mists of his jungle, Tarzan discovers Opar, the city of gold, presumably the remains of Atlantis. But beneath its tranquil facade, he encounters La, the high priestess of the Flaming God, as well as brutal men, savage women, and a bloodstained altar of sacrifice. Tarzan must lead a tribe of primitive warriors through the ancient crypts if he wants to escape the grip of Opar!

Editorial reviews

The second installment in Edgar Rice Burroughs’ Tarzan series, The Return of Tarzan, starts with the iconic man of the jungle in America, still in shock over the engagement of his true love, Jane Porter, to another man.

Leaving for Europe, Tarzan is soon embroiled in new adventures. He takes part in a duel, becomes a special agent in Algeria, and becomes an adopted member of the Waziri tribe. Eventually, his paths cross again with Jane, who is back in Africa on a tour of its western coast.

Subtly modulating her voice to portray various characters, Shelly Frasier gives a measured, understated performance of this story of a noble "ape man".

roller coaster adventure

I can tell that the author tried to explain anthropological concepts to the average man through the guise of a crazy adventure! :D very cool.

Great story and narration

Was not trilled as first with a female voice for Tarzan , but Shelley won me over and would not have had it any other way. She is a top tier narrator The first few books of Burroughs Tarzan are excellent yarns for anyone who likes adventure books.

A Perfect Sequel to the Original. A must read!

This book picks up right where the first one left off. Tarzan's journeys and his evolution as a man and then de-evolution bring the King of the Apes full circle. I was hooked from the beginning and and my attention was held throughout. This book is very much an adventure romance, and leaves you wanting more.

Narrator hard to tolerate

The book itself is not too bad, but the narrator just about totally ruined it. If I'd known I could return the book at the time, I would have!

Narrator has a lovely voice but...

She can't pronounce Archimedes? Threw me off every time she said Arch-ah-meds! I mean come on!!

Not as Good as the Original

If you really wish to continue the Tarzan story than this book is ok. It is very far fetched with many coincidences which occur so that characters will not drop out of the narrative. It would seem that there are only about 10 people in the world because they just keep happening to bump into each other.

I also did not like the narrator Shelly Frasier as much as James Slattery who narrated the first volume.

Just okay

I read this for a book club, books 1 and 2. The ending was nice. I wouldn't say I loved it but it was fine.
