Publisher's summary

Five intergalactic criminal masterminds raid the tranquil world of Mount Pleasant, leaving behind only ruin and slaughter—and the orphaned child Kirth Gersen, who comes to manhood swearing to take bloody revenge. Now Gersen roams the galaxy, bringing vengeance to the Demon Princes one by one, in Jack Vance’s classic series of hardboiled space opera.

Among worlds populated by slave-takers and poisoners, Kirth Gersen is hunting the third Demon Prince, Viole Falushe, an Earthman who conceals his true identity while ruling a remote planet from his decadent Palace of Love. Posing as a journalist and accompanied by the mad poet Navarth, Gersen infiltrates the palace and uncovers a history of erotic obsession. Somewhere among the revelers lurks Falushe, whom Gersen schemes to identify, before delivering harsh justice.

Jack Vance is the best.

It is remarkable to think that all these ideas came about when they did. He was before his time.

Never a dull moment in this series.

So great!

What a pleasure to enjoy Jack Vance again. These days too busy to sit down and read a book, but with narration I can do many tasks while enjoying these great novels again. I have to say Rudnicki is amazing, he dissappears and you can totally immerse yourself in the story without noticing the narration at all. For those with a mind to do so, do not pass up the opportunity to listen to the Demon Princes series.

Great Vance Sci Fi Detective story

Vance is one of my favorite authors but I’d previously only read his Fantasy works. He’s as masterful at world building in the Sci Fi genre as he is with the Fantasy series of the Dying Earth and Lyonesse.

I like the reader a lot. He offers a good neutral baseline while also providing some subtle vocal accents to secondary characters; it’s subtle enough so that it’s easy to identify which character is talking while not making a mockery of them (eg, assigning a ridiculous Scottish accent to a character).
