Publisher's summary

The Jasmine Throne has been hailed as a series opener that will "undoubtedly reshape the landscape of epic fantasy for years to come" (Booklist, starred). Now, award-winning author Tasha Suri's provocative and powerful Burning Kingdoms trilogy continues with The Oleander Sword.

The prophecy of the nameless god—the words that declared Malini the rightful empress of Parijatdvipa—has proven a blessing and curse. She is determined to claim the throne that fate offered her. But even with the strength of the rage in her heart and the army of loyal men by her side, deposing her brother is going to be a brutal and bloody fight.

The power of the deathless waters flows through Priya’s blood. Thrice born priestess, Elder of Ahiranya, Priya’s dream is to see her country rid of the rot that plagues it: both Parijatdvipa's poisonous rule, and the blooming sickness that is slowly spreading through all living things. But she doesn’t yet understand the truth of the magic she carries.

Their chosen paths once pulled them apart. But Malini and Priya's souls remain as entwined as their destinies. And they soon realize that coming together is the only way to save their kingdom from those who would rather see it burn—even if it will cost them.

"It left me breathless." —Andrea Stewart, author of The Bone Shard Daughter

"I loved it.” —Alix E. Harrow, Hugo award-winning author of The Once and Future Witches

"Suri's incandescent feminist masterpiece hits like a steel fist inside a velvet glove." —Shelley Parker-Chan, author of She Who Became the Sun

Incredible

Story is incredible, audio book narrator takes it to a whole other level. I think she’s one of the most skilled voice actors I’ve heard in audio books.

Between this and The Priory of the Orange Tree, I see hope for a whole new future of fantasy, and of sapphic narratives. There is quality and thoughtfulness and magic in the writing that I’ve just not seen in stories that are epic and well-crafted and happen to feature queer women - I feel like we’re in a new era.
I can’t imagine if this had existed when I was younger.

This book somehow outdoes the first in the series on every level. I don’t know how I’ll be able to wait for the next one to come out.

Amazing second book!

Loved this second instillation in the series. It picks up much faster, as most of the world building and set up was done in book 1. The book has a good balance of action sequences and advancing the plot with a sprinkle of romance and star crossed lover angst. A lot of great character development too, with a wonderfully imagined magic system and setting. Overall really enjoyable listen.

Refreshing and amazing

This book combined the familiarity of strong female characters and the satisfaction of seeing them slay with the refreshing setting of India and a new mythology. Voice actress Shiromi Arserio is top tier and makes everything come alive.

Liked this one better than book 1

I didn’t love book one, but I liked it enough to listen to the second. I really liked this part of the series. The characters and relationships were more developed and believable. There was a lot more action and suspense too. Loved the ending and can’t wait for book 3!
