Too much background
This book is heavy on filler and very light on the ship it is supposed to be about.
I do not need to hear details about Nazi atrocities at such and such concentration camp in a book that is supposed to be about a ship.
The author does not stick to the subject at all.
I suspect if he had, this would have been a magazine article, not a book.

Any history of war is imperative
An overwhelming ending. Did not shy away from the accounts of physical suffering. Names. Dates. Preamble and enough explanation to get the sense of history. Ideology and obedience keep wars going. A righteous mind and organization create death. I’m glad I read it. How will the future catch the prejudice that enters our mind? Remembering these stories maybe.
