Publisher's summary

A stunning novel of courage, camaraderie and deadly enemies from the Sunday Times best-selling author of Centurion and The Emperor's Exile.

AD 58. Britannia. Tension is simmering. Danger lies round every corner for Rome's brave soldiers....

Fifteen years after Rome's invasion of Britannia, centurion Marco is back. The island is settled now, bustling with commerce. Macro's goal is to help run his mother's Londinium Inn, and exploit his land grant. He's prepared for the dismal weather and the barbaric ways of the people. But far worse dangers threaten all his plans.

A gang led by an ex-legionary rules the city, demanding protection money and terrorising those who won't pay up. The Roman official in charge has turned a blind eye. Macro has to act. He needs the back-up of the finest soldier he knows: Prefect Cato. But Cato is in distant Rome. Or is he?

As the streets run red with blood, the army's heroes face an enemy as merciless and cunning as any barbarian tribe. The honour of Rome is in their hands....

For listeners of Bernard Cornwell, Conn Iggulden and Ben Kane - unstoppable fiction from an author who knows the Roman world like no other.

If you don't know Simon Scarrow, you don't know Rome.

Gripping story, first rate narration

We get a change from the set-piece battles in this story of crime and gang violence in Londinium, with Macro having a starring role at the beginning, then Cato joining him to battle the overwhelming crime of Roman London. This is also a soldier's tale, as it's the warriors of Rome, with their skilfully led allies, who take on the unequal battle to free a city.. Lots of great by-play fleshes out characters. Jonathan Keeble, as usual, sounds like a full cast all on his own, and grippingly narrates fight scenes, making the shouting and clash realistic. Excellent performance!

"Living tools to be used until they are broken."

Macro has retired to Britain with his wife, Petronella, to enjoy a peaceful life together farming their patch of veteran's land and assisting his mother in the inn she and he together owned in Londinium. Cato was also heading for Britain, having had to leave Rome swiftly and secretly to protect Claudia, Nero's ex lover. Together again they face more blood and battling than any retired veteran might reasonably expect.

The audiobook was again narrated by Jonathan Keeble. His performance was superb, flowing with the action be it military or more personal, investing emotion where needed and generally carrying the reader through the trials and tribulations of 'peaceful' retirement. And, of course, every protagonist is given a personal, unique voice (with, delightfully, the spy, Appolonius, sounding very much like Julian Clarey).

As a fan of books set in the ancient Roman era, I have delighted in Simon Scarrow's eagle series since book one, when Cato and Macro first met.. Now in Book 20 of the series, it is every bit as good: great characters, good story lines, atmospheric, told with a deceptively simple feel of the present which provides a vivid sense of being there.
A definite recommendation.

Fantastic.

Another fantastic book from Simon Scarrow. Jonathan Keeble as the narrator kills it as always. If you know Roman history, Boudicca should be an important character in the next few books. 10/10 recommend this series.

Can't wait for Legate Cato and Camp Prefect Macro

I love how this series is playing perfectly into Boudica's rebellion and how the author has set the scene, very very early on on in the series, that we can reasonably expect a finale to be set around the year of the four emperors.
