Excellent update of the radio plays

The voices of Holmes and Watson are the best. Other actors are variable, sometimes quite stagy in delivery. The biggest improvement over the OTR versions is Nigel Bruce’ bumbling dialogue (and awkward exposition) is absent.
These adventures do not seek to replicate original Doyle stories but rather improve on the radio plays and add new stories. (Compared to ACD’s writings, the atmosphere of 1890’s London is missing: jargon, politics, class structure, rapid mail delivery, national rivalries, pending wars, etc.) A couple criticisms: some stories are simplistic like Encyclopedia Brown and not much novelty in modus operandi though most are appropriately complex with adequate choice of suspects. In these updates, Holmes is very wealthy and sometimes tips a cabby a month’s wages. Background noises are improved but still a bit thin, nary a horse whinny or street voice... I’m getting too picky now, these versions are the best of the Watson/Holmes radio play genre.

Sherlock AND Watson at their best

I enjoy Sherlock very much, whether on film or radio. I have heard and seen the best. One aspect of Sherlock that has always bothered me, is how Holmes would talk to Watson. Holmes was constantly insulting Watson. Bugs me. Also, Watson's character is generally portrayed as a humbler. Bugs me. Jim French's Sherlock is different. Sherlock treats Watson w/respect, while still being Sherlock. Also, Jim French's Watson doesn't mumble when he talks, and isn't a boob. The acting is excellent and enjoyable. The stories that I have heard (I'm on number 5) are enjoyable and credible, and I'm not easy to please. I am an OTR junkie. I'll be trying other titles, for sure. Bravo, Jim French Productions.

good stories in full cast presentation

I am a huge fan of the Sherlock Holmes stories narrated by Charlton Griffin. I have listened to them many times and was looking for something fresh. I came across this and gave it a try. I really like the stories so far and the full cast audio is great, especially when female characters are speaking, its much more believable than a man trying to narrate in a woman's voice. there are a few issues however. one being that many of the voices, especially those of Holmes and Watson, are so similar that they are difficult to distinguish. as this is read like a play, it is not always made clear who is speaking. the second issue for me is that Holmes' mannerisms, voice and style of speech are very different than what was originally depicted by Sir Arthur Connan Doyle. I find it difficult to picture this Holmes as the commanding presence of the original stories. he comes across rather meek and mild mannered. with all that said I would still recommend for the good stories and full cast experience.
