Publisher's summary

"They believed they had come to the last turning of the wheel."

When the Bloodmoon rose, death came rushing into the world. Now the water is bitter, blight consumes everything, and the Crone haunts the hills.

While the Druid of Blackthorn searches desperately for hope, the Ovate returns from the underworld bringing omens of despair. But Idris, the young bard, Keeper of the Sacred Word, will walk through fire and iron to uncover a question no one has ever dared to ask - a question that carries a world of answers on its back, a question that can change everything.

But his time is short. The land is dying. And the Bloodmoon is rising again.

Powerful

I originally listened to this book to see if it might be a fun/appropriate fantasy book for my boys (age 10-12) but it quickly became clear that they are several years young. The combination of intense darkness and the intricate details to the story would be a bit much. But as soon as I dismissed it as a possibility for the kids I was drawn into the story myself and found it to be a powerful and timely gift.

Truth and beauty

Gripping and immersive, the story reminds me of Till We Have Faces, and, like that great classic, brings tears to my eyes and hope singing to my heart. A truly beautiful work.

Drew me in carefully, kept my attention and held my respect

The Door on Half-Bald Hill isn’t a story to fall into carelessly. It asked me to enter its world and to consider the lessons & lives of those I encountered.

This may sound odd- but I feel respected by the author. Invited in to the tale. It kept my attention and provided an insightful lens through which to view my strange world (2020... ‘nough said). I’ll definitely listen again!

Struggled through it

I call it a good book. But might be better to read written print instead of listening to it. I struggled to keep characters straight and had to crank up the volume on my device to hear everything that was said.

The prose. Great story.LOVED this book.

The narrator was excellent but it is so well written. I call this high fiction.

Interesting concept, but it felt incomplete.

(Don't Worry! No Spoilers.)

Nearly the entire story was the inner monologue of the main character and what he was doing. It might be better in book form then to listened to, but having the unvaried voice for so much of the book was just not what I was used to.

I picked this book by the recommendation of my favorite musician and writer. The story was interesting, had a good concept and had lovely descriptions of the backdrops, but as a whole it felt a bit dry and left so many questions. There were somethings that seemed to have no explanation and some things that had so much detail it was confusing. I will listen to it again. Maybe it will make more sense 2nd time around.
