In all likelihood, World War II would have ended the same way, but it would have taken much longer and cost that many more lives.

For over six weeks, they committed some of the worst atrocities, first against the Chinese soldiers after they surrendered, then against the civilians. The Westerners who did not flee from the city prior to the Japanese arrival set up a safety zone in the weeks leading up to the Imperial Army entering the city. This was the only place where there was relative safety.

A worthy final installment on the people's trilogy. I found it quite refreshing that the book put a lot of focus on the impact of the Cultural Revolution on the general population and how they tried to get on with their lives while all this was going on. As in the other two books, the all-pervasive violence and how it tears families, friends, and the social fabric apart is just beyond words.

An In-Depth Book
The author covers the era in-depth, with all of the death, denunciations, and economic calamity that happened in this period (along with some of the ingenuity and entrepreneurship of the times, as well). I found the entry on the Great Leap Forward to be a more fascinating read, but this book is still eye-opening.
