Publisher's summary

A former Texas Ranger on a mission. A determined woman slowly losing her sight. A love neither could have predicted...and a danger that may steal their happy ending before it can even begin.

Glory Day may be losing her vision, but that doesn't mean she'll ever stop fighting. Determined to provide for her struggling family, she confronts an outlaw with a price on his head. But when a mysterious cowboy gets between her and her target, Glory accidentally shoots him instead. Flustered, she has no option but to take the handsome stranger home to treat his wounds.

Former Texas Ranger Luke McClain didn't plan to fall in love, but there's no denying the strength of Glory's will or the sweetness of her heart. But Glory's been burned before, and Luke will have to reach into the depths of his own battered soul to convince her to take a chance...and trust that love is worth fighting for.

Luke McClain and Glory Day

*****SPOILER ALERT*****

The Cowboy Who Came Calling by Linda Broday. Texas Heroes trilogy, book 2. Audible Premium Plus audiobook borrow. Multiple POV (Glory's, Luke's, Patience's, and at least 2 other side characters). Historical western. Tiffany Morgan's narration was entertaining. It's listed as 10 hours 48 minutes; I listened at speed 2.50 for 4 hours 19 minutes. Content warnings: h's father is framed and imprisoned; H was framed and lost his job as a Texas Ranger; h's father is dying; H's father dies from a fall; h becomes permanently blind; h's mom is depressed, su¡c¡dal, and addicted to Laudanum; murders.

Location: Santa Anna, Texas, 1881

Glory Marie (Day) McClain (20) is a blue-eyed blonde who is now running her household and taking care of her mother and 2 younger sisters. Jack, her father, was framed, imprisoned, and is now dying from an unnamed illness. Ruth, her mother, has withdrawn suffering headaches and depression since her love is in prison, and she's now slipping away because she's using Laudanum. Her sisters, Hope (16; engaged before the end) and Patience Ann (aka Pumpkin; 10; reddish gold hair), keep Glory busy while she's taking care of their property. Her Uncle Pete and Aunt Dorothy help where they can. Glory is going blind from a mule's kick to the head 2 months before the story begins. She never received medical attention. She's hoping for a miracle to save her father and their property. Former Texas Ranger Luke McClain is hunting MadDog Perkins for k¡ll¡ng Max Sand, his best friend/former partner. His older brother Duel is married to Jessie, and together, they have 6 children (3 Butler children, Marley Rose, Lily, and Ethan). Luke has a secret crush on Jessie. Luke also has a married sister (Victoria). Sadly, Walt (Duel, Luke, and Victoria's father) suffered a catastrophic fall, and Luke isn't informed for almost a month because his family didn't know where he was. Luke is a daydreamer who believed he was called to be in law enforcement. Luke overhears someone tell Glory where MadDog is hiding and the two square off over who will be taking him in. Glory's family needs the $500 bounty, and Luke needs to question him. Unfortunately, MadDog gets away, and Glory accidentally shot Luke in the thigh. Glory took Luke to her home, cleaned him up, and he stayed for a short time while he recovered. The Day family receives word that Jack wants them to come see him because his health is failing him. If that wasn't bad enough, they also get notice that the bank is going to foreclose on their mortgage. In the end, Luke and Glory are on their honeymoon. They visit a doctor who confirms she's blind with no hopes of ever regaining her sight, and her father was released from prison. JP

There is a third book, but I'm not currently interested in Marley Rose's story: To Catch A Texas Star.

1.5 out of 5 on my spice scale.
