Publisher's summary

An emotionally moving novel of a woman in search of a new beginning and a man haunted by the past—from the New York Times bestselling author of the Tradd Street novels.

At thirty-two, Jillian Parrish finally finds the courage to put herself in the driver’s seat of her life. Pregnant and recently divorced, she and her seven-year-old daughter find refuge and solace on Pawleys Island, South Carolina—Jillian’s only source of happy childhood memories. Summers spent at her grandmother’s beach house had been Jillian’s sanctuary from indifferent parents—until her best friend Lauren Mills disappeared, never to be found.

Linc Rising, Lauren’s boyfriend and Jillian’s confidant, had been a suspect in Lauren’s disappearance. Jillian had never doubted his innocence—but because her parents had whisked her back home to Atlanta, she never got a chance to tell him. Now, a resentful Linc is back on Pawleys Island—renovating the old Mills house. And as ghosts of the past are resurrected, and as Jillian’s daughter begins having eerie conversations with an imaginary friend named Lauren, Jillian and Linc will uncover the truth about Lauren’s disappearance and about the feelings they have buried for sixteen years...

Intriguing

Storyline was good. It kept me listening. Would have been better with using foul language.

This author provides everything I need in a good read.

starting with the story of Lauren, her teenage boyfriend Linc, Jillian finds the strength she needs to leave the sadness of her old life behind when she comes to live in the house that had belonged to her grandmother. Jillian has a daughter named Grace who is able to communicate with Lauren. initially, Jillian is terrified and unable to believe that her daughter can communicate with Lauren. Jillian tries to convince Grace that Lauren is just her imaginary friend but not real.
there is so much to unpack in this book and so many ups and downs as Jillian finds the strength to be a good mother to both of her children, and the courage to stand up to those who have done her wrong in the past. there are several twists in the plot leaving me changing course throughout the story. not knowing who Janie is early on in the story to finding her place in the last chapters. I turn to Karen White romance books because it's not just another sappy love story. the narrator is perfect for this book. she manages to voice every character so that you know who is talking at any given time.

I have read almost every book Karen White has written. including her stand-alones as well as series. there is even a mention in this book about the House on Tradd Street which is another book written by Karen White and the first book in the Tradd street series.

if you get the opportunity to read this book, don't pass it up. I prefer audio books. they work best for me and I truly love the narrators in Karen White's books.

Just as good as I remembered!

I read this years ago but failing eyesight made me listen to audio books. After searching for this book with the many others by Karen I learned it wasn’t available in audio format. Well now I’m happy to have found it again! Thanks! It was just as good as I remembered.
