Publisher's summary

Rachel Innes, a middle-aged spinster, has barely settled in at the country house she has rented for the summer when a series of bizarre and violent events threaten to perturb her normally unflappable nature. A strange figure appears briefly in the twilight outside a window. At night, a rattling, metallic sound reverberates through dark halls, and - most disconcerting of all - the body of a strange man is found lying in a pool of blood at the bottom of a circular staircase.

Before this spine-tingling tale ends, five connected deaths shatter the normally placid atmosphere of the vacation retreat. Rachel’s devoted niece and nephew are among the prime suspects in one of the murders; stolen securities and a bank default threaten the young pair’s financial security, and Aunt “Ray” ultimately fights for her life in an airless secret room.

Extremely Entertaining

New York society spinster Rachel Innes rents a summer home for herself and her adult niece and nephew. While there, they experience mystery, deception, murder, and more. This is a well-written, wonderfully convoluted, completely engrossing, and thoroughly entertaining story. It has some laugh out loud moments, likable characters, and many twists. While not perfect, it's close enough to earn five stars from me.

Ms. Fuller gave an above average narration, though there were a few times that the voices weren't distinct.

My FAVE Version of this Cozy Mystery

What a TREAT, indeed 🥰👏! This has always been my favorite Mary Roberts Rinehart mystery EXCEPT for the painfully cruel racist comments made by the main character - which were sadly deemed acceptable at the time of the original publication date. Thank you, Cathleen Fuller, for a lovely adaptation and WONderful narration.

Best Mystery Book Ever!

This author was at Agatha Christy’s level before Agatha ever penned her first story. I have well over a thousand books in my library and seldom write reviews, but this is one of the most entertaining mysteries I’ve ever read. I am wondering how I have only just now stumbled upon Ms Rinehart. Excellent adaptation and narration by Cathleen Fuller as well.
