Publisher's summary

When Althea Leary abandons her nine-year-old son, Jasper, he's left on his uncle's farm with nothing but a change of clothes and a Bible.

It's 1952, and Jasper isn't allowed to ask questions or make a fuss. He's lucky to even have a home and must keep his mouth shut and his ears open to stay in his uncle's good graces. No one knows where his mother went or whether she's coming back. Desperate to see her again, he must take matters into his own hands. From the farm, he embarks on a treacherous search that will take him to the squalid hideaways of Detroit and back again, through tawdry taverns, peep shows, and gambling houses.

As he's drawn deeper into an adult world of corruption, scandal, and murder, Jasper uncovers the shocking past still chasing his mother - and now it's chasing him too.

Accents are wrong

The narrator kept giving characters southern accents— it's set in Michigan! How difficult is it to do a midwestern accent? There's really no excuse. It was very, distracting from what was, over all, a reasonable story.

Good story told through a young boy

This is the first book I have read by this author and I look forward to reading more of his books. I enjoyed this book it is a mystery told through a young boy about the past and present. It revolves about his missing mother and himself. Great book and the audio narrator also did a good job. I would definitely recommend this book.

A bit disappointing

I purchased this book specifically because I so enjoyed The Dead Key. Although there was nothing "wrong" about the book, I wasn't riveted in any way. Narration was good; I just didn't really like the story that much.

Loved the story!

What did you like best about this story?

I liked that the whole story is from the point of view of the 9-10 year old boy, so some of the parts and the things he says you have to interpret yourself!

What about Luke Daniels’s performance did you like?

I loved how he made the "bad guys" in the story sound really mean, almost cartoon like. I could really picture them!

Any additional comments?

I loved the story, it made me want to keep listening as the mystery unfolded for Jasper. The poor thing got himself hurt so many times, I felt so bad for him! He has nine lives-that's for sure! Overall a very detailed well-written story!
