Publisher's summary

The crew of the deep-sea exploration rig Leaguer discovers oil sweeter, purer, and easier to refine than the fields in Saudi Arabia. To confirm their own analysis of their trillion dollar find, a test barrel is flown from the drill site off the coast of Papua/New Guinea to Houston Analytical Laboratories (HAL).

As the unsuspecting scientists at HAL await the arrival of the oil, they ready their lab for what they know is an important job. They've seen the test results from Leaguer; this find could be history.

While the barrel is on its way to Houston, an "infection" breaks out on the far-away rig. As life aboard the rig descends into chaos, the scientists at HAL make their own discovery—what Leaguer found isn't oil.

Trapped in their labs, the scientists must find a way to fight a creature that defies chemistry, physics, and biology.

The Black: Arrival, a parallel story to the Amazon horror best seller The Black, is a compelling suspense novel that will fill you with claustrophobic dread.

Now that The Black has arrived, will humanity survive?

intense

The Black: Arrival -is riveting , It had me on the edge of my seat throughout this gripping story. There's danger inside the laboratory, where the scientists are evaluating a specimen from depths of the ocean. Tensions and fears abound when it expands.
New challenges for the scientists in this facility, what is it's molecular makeup? How can they contain it? something sinistery black is lurking within the building. With no safe place to go, they became the hunted. Paul E Cooley writes about the descriptions of their plight, and how this entity takes over is astoundingly intense.
Joe Hempel gripping narration is so good. All the emotions, angst, fears, despair and dangers they all face are felt in this story . very well done.

The Black, Arrival

I didn’t think this book was quite as good as the first one but I still enjoyed it a lot. I’ve already signed up for the next one when it comes out

Great addition to series!

This is the second book I've read/listened to by Paul E Cooley. Again, this is not my normal trope to read. I really wanted more after book one though, and was eager to start this book. It wasn't what was expecting. It is the labs "story" of the black thing, so the timeline is simultaneous. It definitely was more fast paced through the whole book versus how book one was written. Having that story really added to this one though. Again, I liked getting to know the characters and the conflicts between them. This definitely ended with the possibility of more to come. I really want a wrap-up of book one as well.

Joe Hempel is an excellent narrator. His performance for both male and female voices is well done! So few have that talent. His performance had the audiobook rolling like a movie in my head, keeping me completely engaged.

Good story!

This was a good book. I really liked the idea of M2 interacting and absorbing things. The narrators do a great job telling the story. I will definitely read the next book in the series.

Great story!💜

I really liked this story. IMO the overall storyline felt a little like book 1 just in a different location. That said, as with book 1, I did enjoy the interesting characters and how each one handled themselves in the face of the Black, if the Black had a face 🤷🏻‍♀️.
I especially liked one part where someone just decided it was time for a smoke 😂.
Mostly I enjoyed the narration. Joe Hempel does a fantastic job voice acting each of these characters.
This is book 2 and can be read as a standalone but the author does leave it open to a possible book 3.
Which I’m looking forward to.
I recommend this book.

Much better than the 1st

This book had my heart racing at several points and I loved how the characters were more connected. I just couldn't understand how disconnected they were in the first story on the rig!! it's like they were completely divided and not telling each other what was going on until near the end. A little of that showed up in this story but very little. I can't wait to get started on the next one and the performance was GREAT!!

Excellent Book 5 ⭐️

This was a great book. It's well written, and thought through. I like how it ties up to the first book, but you don't need to read the first book to enjoy this one although I'd recommend it. Something I liked in particular was how Cooley isolated the characters, it felt like they were isolated and was believable. The narration really makes the story extremely engaging as well!

Terrifying! Brilliantly written!

I loved the first book of "The Black" trilogy, and this second book is even more terrifying because it takes place on the mainland (in Texas), not far away on an ocean drilling platform. I couldn’t even listen to it at night, and I am a longtime horror fan. The setting in the laboratory building of a private company is very realistically portrayed. I love the attention to detail about the layout of the building and the realistic instruments and methodology of the scientists in their work. The characters are distinctive, smart, and likeable, so I was very emotionally invested in their survival. The author has written an unpredictable and original horror trilogy of the highest quality. I highly recommend it to all horror fans. The book includes violence, contagion/monster horror, and occasional four-letter words.

This trilogy must be read in order. Previously reading Book 1 increased my fear and dread when reading this novel. I am extremely impressed with the writing and the narration quality, and this book is in my top 5 favorite horror books. Joe Hempel delivered a stellar performance and took the text to the next level with his expertise at bringing every scene to life. He is especially great at the action scenes.

I requested and received a free audio copy via the publisher, and I voluntarily wrote this honest review. #TheFlockVIPReviewTeam #FiresideAudio
