Editorial reviews

Performer Owen Jordan brings his upbeat, dramatic voice to this rendition of Lynd Ward's 1952 Caldecott-winning book. A boy named Johnny is humiliated by having the only barn in town without a bear skin, but when he goes out to shoot a big one, he brings home a little cub instead. The bear grows into a nuisance, and Johnny is forced to make some hard decisions. A great listen to teach kids the importance of taking responsibility for their actions and to dissuade them from inappropriate pets.

Publisher's summary

Johnny hunts for the biggest bear in the forest, but comes home with a little bear, that grows and grows and grows.

A boy and his bear

I just loved reading this to my youngest boy, particularly during the K-2 period. Great story about the relationship between a boy and his bear as the bear begins to grow up and "cause trouble."
