Publisher's summary

True Crime detective Nathan Heller returns in a brand new case that connects a millionaire’s kidnapped child to Robert F. Kennedy’s campaign to bring down union boss Jimmy Hoffa.

Nathan Heller, star of MWA Grandmaster Max Allan Collins’ most acclaimed series of novels (more than 1 million copies sold to date!), comes to Hard Case Crime for the first time in an all-new thriller drawn from the pages of history. A millionaire’s son is kidnapped and private eye Heller is called in to help. But when half of the record $600,000 ransom goes missing, Heller must wade through a morass of deception and depravity to blow the lid off a notorious crime whose consequences reach into the corridors of power in Washington D.C., where Bobby Kennedy works tirelessly to take down crooked union boss Jimmy Hoffa…

Nate Heller Does It Again

Nathan Heller is one of my all-time favorite fictional characters, mostly because Max Allan Collins brings him to life so perfectly.
I had never heard of the Greenlease kidnapping, but after reading Collins account, I looked into the case. I discovered that Collins had (as always) done meticulous research into murder as well as all the men and women involved.
The novel's narration is a huge selling point. As a long-time fan, I was delighted to hear Dan Miller acting as Nathan Heller. Miller more than reads the book, for the entire series (as far as I know) Miller IS Nate Heller.
If you're a fan of historical fiction and/or pulp(ish)Detective novel's, you have to hear The Big Bundle. if you're not a fan? Please check it out, Collins is quite good at what he does.

Missouri Breaks

The narrator Dan John Miller makes it real for me.
To carry off that dialogue a noir tone is needed and DJM delivers.
I never know if Max’s character are based on authentic characters but they are real to me!
Midwest crime novels rule!

KC and STL action

For probably the last 10 Heller books I've thought that eventually there would be one dealing with the disappearance of Jimmy Hoffa. I thought this was it, I only read the summary enough to see the Hoffa name mentioned. I would have bought the book anyway but was still a bit surprised. I kept thinking the story might be leading to Hoffa as his union was involved in the story but it did not go there.

I had never heard of the kidnapping and murder of a six year old boy in Kansas City in the 1950s. This story was a complete surprise to me. It had many of the bad actors that have been involved with Nate over the serie,s the tentacles of many of them were felt in this book.

It was an enjoyable, quick listen but I'm still wondering if there will be that Hoffa book..

Another Strong Entry

I hope Max keeps writing the Heller series. Not one bad one in the bunch.
