Publisher's summary

Ten-year-old Gracie Lee knows a few things. She knows which trees are best for climbing. She knows how to walk through the hallway without making a sound on the hardwood floor. She knows if Daddy's crop gets one more drop of rain, the whole family will pay the price.

There are plenty of things Gracie doesn't know. These things keep her awake at night.

Gracie longs for something bigger and grander and truer, and feels certain there is more to life beyond school and dull church sermons. She worries about the soldiers in Vietnam and wonders what it must be like to have been born Lisa Marie Presley from Tennessee instead of Gracie Lee Abbott from Arkansas. Mostly, she wishes her Daddy wasn't so mean.

Gracie's unchecked imagination leads to adventure, and adventure leads to trouble. She confides in unexpected characters and seeks solace in a mysterious gray house beyond the cotton field. When Gracie faces a difficult family situation, she must make a life-altering decision, one that will test the very essence of her character.

Wonderful! Wonderful!

I wasn't sure what to expect when I spent a credit for this book. As you can see, I loved it. Grace reminded me of myself so much a child growing up on a farm in the South. I wasn't as nosey as she, but still very curious and adventurous. This is a wonderful read where I laughed and felt sad. Definitely recommend it.

FEELS LIKE A TRUE STORY

I know it's fiction, but it seems real. Moving, sad, funny. I recommend! The narrator was believable as well!

Engaging, touching, story

A story with an alcoholic abusive father and long suffering religious mother is not exactly new but this was a very well told story and I had a hard time putting it down. As the story wrapped up, however. one of the plot lines was weak and the other was disappointing and kind of ruined it for me.

Such a Good Book

This book was precious, the details were amazing and the storyline was so well done. I have recently recommended it to my friends. My father grew up in the same part of Arkansas as the main character, so the stories were even more compelling and interesting than I had expected. 5/5.

Awesome and relatable!

I see an awesome movie comparable to “Where the Crawdads Sing” for Reese Witherspoon (Hello Sunshine) in this book!

Very good book

I loved everything about this book! Except the end. But don't let that stop you from listening to a really really good book! I listened to this with my husband while traveling and he also enjoyed it. Gracie Lee is like so many of us growing up. So many of my own childhood memories arose while listening. I highly recommend this book to anyone that wants a good, clean, and interesting story!

Shows promise in the beginning ....

This story shows a lot of promise in the beginning and then just falls flat. It drones on and on same song , different verse. The narrator has a flat voice and never gets to animated even when she should. Her “male” voice is the same for each male character. I finished it but wish I would have stopped and returned it . The story itself isn’t even impressive. Waste of time.
