Class is back in session...
Sophronia continues her second year at finishing school in style - with a steel-bladed fan secreted in the folds of her ball gown, of course. Such a fashionable choice of weapon comes in handy when Sophronia, her best friend Dimity, sweet sootie Soap, and the charming Lord Felix Mersey stowaway on a train to return their classmate Sidheag to her werewolf pack in Scotland. No one suspected what - or who - they would find aboard that suspiciously empty train. Sophronia uncovers a plot that threatens to throw all of London into chaos and she must decide where her loyalties lie, once and for all.
Gather your poison, steel tipped quill, and the rest of your school supplies and join Mademoiselle Geraldine's proper young killing machines in the third rousing installment in the New York Times best-selling Finishing School Series by steampunk author, Gail Carriger.

"[A] delightfully madcap espionage adventure..." (Kirkus Reviews)
"Teenage and adult fans alike will rejoice that Carriger retains her flair for musical prose, over-the-top names, clever wit, and strange yet helpful mechanical devices of all kinds. Carriger's blend of comically exaggerated characters and madcap action will easily win over readers once again." (Publishers Weekly)
"[Carriger] jumps right into the thick of the action, developing a fast-paced plot that is sure to keep readers' attention... this is a must-have purchase." (School Library Journal)
I am a big fan of Gail Carriger and she does not disappoint in this installment of the finishing school series. This book was funny, action packed and just adorable. The match between narrator and content was perfect, I can't imagine this book read any other way, Moira Quirk completely nailed it. I couldn't stop listening even though I wanted it to last longer. I loved where the story went and will be eagerly anticipating the next one as well as a new series due to be released in March. There are few books that are as delightful to listen to as this one. Thanks Audible!
Finishing School - Book the Third: not the wildest plot of the bunch, but certainly just as entertaining and well performed!! I'll actually take it a step further and say this was Moira Quirks best performance yet. Her spunk and exaggeration, along with her ability to perform countless voices, literally transforms her in to each character making you completely forget that only one person is actually reading. Sad to know there is only one book left, but for me, this is a series I will be listening to again.
This series is a delightfully funny romp through vampire and werewolf inhabited Victorian England. I found this book to be not quite up to par with its fellows, yet still very entertaining. Bottom line, it's still worth spending the credit, but not quite as brilliant as the first two books in the series.
I love to read, but I am time-limited. Audible allows me to keep up with all my favorite authors while on the hiking trail. Thanks, Audible!
Gail Carriger does it again. She has written another fantastic book creating another mandatory binge listening situation. Worth it every time. I also always find it hard to decide what my next book will be after I finish a book by Carriger, because what I really want to read is another book by Carriger.
I do like the series, the setup and characters. But was disappointed in this installment. There is little plot, and missed opportunities. For instance there is a ball for Sophronia's older brother's engagement but the older brother and his intended don't get any story time. Instead we read about hours of dressing and gossiping. Then the engagement party is reduced to an opportunity for mischief and our cast of characters are off on balloon and train chases. The book substitutes chase scenes for plot development.
Ultimately 3 characters face life altering decisions because they couldn't stay home and let adults take care of the problem of what will become of the Scotland werewolf pack. The book ends before they come near the pack. The plot really is that thin. They do discover a couple of clues but the plot is only advanced slightly.
The best part is the fight with steel fans.
If you want plot, wait for the next book. If you enjoy long expositions about a girls' school and who to love or not, with occasional daring do, read on.
I thoroughly enjoy Gail Carriger's sense of humor and the ridiculous. The story is fun and entertaining, and the narrator is easy to listen to. Overall excellent.
This was a fun and much more mature book as Sephronia has gotten older. Lots of adventure for her and her friends. Quite a surprising end to this book, leaving for a luscious new beginning in Book 4.
I love this series. Can't wait to hear the final book. It has everything. Drama, action, love, mystery, laughter, suspense..... All I need in a great book!
I have been enjoying listening to books since the late 90's and reading them the old fashioned way since my parents taught me!
And so does my teenage son. They are interesting, funny, contain enough sarcasm to satisfy a young adult and have the occasional unfamiliar vocabulary word to prompt a little bit of thought and a quick search on Google for clarification. As a mother and teacher, what's not to like?!
