That’s what it’s like for Luce to be apart from her fallen angel boyfriend, Daniel. It took them an eternity to find one another, but now he has told her he must go away. Just long enough to hunt down the Outcasts - immortals who want to kill Luce. Daniel hides Luce at Shoreline, a school on the rocky California coast with unusually gifted students: Nephilim, the offspring of fallen angels and humans.

At Shoreline, Luce learns what the Shadows are, and how she can use them as windows to her previous lives. Yet the more Luce learns, the more she suspects that Daniel hasn’t told her everything. He’s hiding something - something dangerous. What if Daniel’s version of the past isn’t actually true? What if Luce is really meant to be with someone else?

Love the story, not so sure of the narrator

Where does Torment rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Where would it rank? Well Out of 1-10 10 being my favorite series of audio books to listen to which is based on performance of narrator not story line, I would say this is a 6.

What did you like best about this story?

The only thing I liked is the story itself.

What did you like about the performance? What did you dislike?

Hunger games books were awesome but the narrator was horrible choice, the House of night books kept changing narrators and the one they ended with just wasn't the best for a book based on a nerdy girl being read by a preppy girl, and then there is this series where its an amazing story, lots of imagination to it when I read the books I can't put them down, however the narrator sorta ruins it for me, there isn't enough infliction, emotion, it feels like she is acting in a soap opera and with these books I like to feel connected to the book as if I am in it myself and living the story, Edwina Wren is my fav narrator because you can tell without her saying, what character is talking at that moment and you can feel the emotions come alive. This narrator Justine Eyre, well she is a good reader and I would hate to write a review that was offensive or mean so the best way I can honestly express how her narrating this series was like for me is to say it felt like some outsider was reading a story to random others. Someone who isn't a character int he book someone who is totally a stranger and is seriously lacking in making the book have a soul and connect too the listeners. I just wish she could soften her voice and make it really sound the way Luce would sound, make it so when she is speaking for various characters you actually hear her voice change so you know it is a different person talking. In these books thanks to Justine they all sound alike and they all sound completely void of humanness qualities.

it was slow in the middle, but there's no part of the book I didn't like.

The Majority of the Book was Torment

Ugh!!! While I still love that this book is about angels and demons, I'm totally disappointed in Luce. The adjective that best describes her is INSIPID. I cut her a lot of slack in the first book because she was just finding out about her soulmate, Daniel, and the whole angelic world. However, Torment finds her still willing to accept Daniel's insistence on keeping her in the dark about everything, even though she's in mortal danger, and even though he keeps saying that everything he does is to keep her safe. Barf!

Of course, it ends on a cliffhanger, and I guess I'm a sucker for punishment because I will be reading Passion. I hope Lauren Kate surprises me and actually gives her protagonist a spine.

pronounce nephilim

Can someone please teach the reader how to pronounce nephilim? I annoys me the way she says nephilim.

the story was well written but...

the narrator was odd in her different voices. I just didn't like it. she has a nasaly voice and it distracted me from the story.

Better than the first book

I didn't really like the first book "Fallen". But this book answered more questions and stayed on track more than the first. I still don't like how it left so many questions unanswered, but it was better than the first book and I realize now that is just part of the author's style... you have to keep reading the series to get all the answers. I hope the series keeps getting better.

Wonderful!

This is the second book in the series and I really enjoyed it! There are a lot of questions that go unanswered, so be prepared! I actually like that because it makes me excited for the next installment, which is supposed to be out in June 2011. Not to spoil it, but I hope she chooses Miles, he seems to be the only one being truthful to Luce!
