Editorial reviews

Not much has changed in the young adult fiction world since the Twilight Saga hit the bookshelves, charming tweens and beyond with a story of lustful romance with a supernatural bent. Waves of like-minded narratives have been riding the coattails of the famous series' roaring success, but few are as thrilling and unique as Colleen Houck's Tiger's Curse. An enchanting story that takes place primarily in India (a setting ripe with potential for the vivid descriptions Houck delivers), Tiger's Curse is grounded in Indian mythology and culture. Annika Boras narrates with Sanjiv Jahveri, and they more than meet the challenges of performing a contemporary story told in a mysterious, foreign setting.

When 17-year-old orphan Kelsey attends a local summer job fair, she feels that nothing is beneath her. One week later, she finds herself temping at a circus, where she is tasked with caring for an unusually docile white tiger named Ren. Given how smoothly Kelsey is able to care for Ren, she is asked to accompany him on his transport to India, where he will return to his owner. With nothing left for her at home, Kelsey seizes the opportunity for this unique experience. She soon discovers that Ren is in fact not a tiger, but a handsome prince trapped by a curse cast upon him many years ago. The story quickly evolves into an engrossing romance between Kelsey and Ren, with a race against time to break the tiger's curse.

Between the exotic Indian landscapes and the Indiana Jones-like obstacles Kelsey and Ren walk into, Boras has plenty of colorful material to work with. From her astonished reaction at discovering of the tiger's true identity to her calculated determination as she pieces together how to break the curse, Boras approaches every scene with keen awareness of her character. Such is a testament to her erudite storytelling. Listening to her tackle such a diverse array of description, setting, and characters is the best way to experience this novel. Tiger's Curse will leave you breathless for days. —Suzanne Day

Publisher's summary

Critic reviews

"A smart, vibrant adventure romance wrapped in a quest… takes the protagonists through adventures that would make Steven Spielberg proud… Full of danger, dash, allegory, and love under the banana tree." ( Kirkus Reviews)

Escape into a very sexy tiger voice!

Where does Tiger's Curse rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I loved this story because it is a complete exit from reality! However the main charecter is annoying as all get out. I still couldnt stop listening! Almost threw my Ipod a couple times!
Its saving grace is the Narrator! She did an amazing job at the differnent voices The simple fact that a women could do a male voice that makes me weak in the knees! SCARY!

Would you recommend Tiger's Curse to your friends? Why or why not?

Yes because not everyone thinks women written this way are complete morons! and the other characters are amazing! And for all my whining I still wanted her to win in the end.

What does Annika Boras and Sanjiv Jahveri bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

Everything! The feeling like you really are in India! I was transported!

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Yes yes and yes!

Still my favorite series

I'm much more comfortable with the story, now that I can say the names correctly. I would really love it if this world existed.

incredibly addicting

some most hilarious parts of this book come in the serious moments. but that is not the main focus. i really enjoyed reading the 'womans wiles' because it is so true to life of how women act and the overall story sounds almost realistic with the detail. i cant wait to read the next in the series.

Mediocre

I was really excited about this book based upon its reviews. I have to say I am not impressed. While it is not a bad book, it is very slow paced and the main character, Kelsey drives me nuts. I find her highly annoying and lacking as the heroine. I feel like this just continues to drag on and on without much substance. I bought all 4 books in the series and I am disappointed I bought them, even if I purchased them on a sale.

In my opinion this book was made for middle schoolers. Sorry

Not as good as I hoped

This book has been in my wish list for a long time. After reading all the reviews I finally went ahead and bought it. The beginning sucked me in, but then it slowed down A LOT and I began to lose interest. I kept on listening hoping for things to pick back up. I can't say they ever did. That wasn't the most disappointing part though. By the end of the book I was completely annoyed by the main character. It was like her entire personality changed and I couldn't buy into this "new" character. It just didn't make sense to me. Because of that, I am not sure if I will read the next one. I might if I can get it from the library, but I wouldn't spend money on it.

teen romance meets India travel brochure

Well, it's a teen paranormal romance novel, that's all you really need to know about it. It's not particularly better or particularly worse than thousands of others out there. It's got everything you'd expect (teenage heroine without a family, who is shy, mousy and romantically inexperienced but is mysteriously necessary? check! supernatural hero who is ridiculously handsome, plagued by some terrible but not disfiguring curse, protective verging on misogynistic, waaaaay older than the heroine, devoted and loyal? check!) plus its got a neato setting in India.

I try not to get too caught up in little plot things in books like this (you know, like how Keshan who has spent that last three hundred years as a tiger in the Indian jungle can speak fluent, modern Enlighsh?). On the other hand, these characters are so stupid, it really aggrevated me. I mean, they've spent hundreds of years trying to break the curse, and when they find out how to do that they completely don't think anything through. As soon as they get the prophesy they a) start off without considering that the whole 'five sacrifices' thing? and b) go immediately to get Keshan even though the prophesy says specifically that there will only be ONE transformation for ONE man. Smart characters would think about these things. That sort of thing is why I won't be getting any of the other books in this series. Besides, we all know how it ends anyway...

The female narrator did a great job. Her accents weren't forced or inconsistent. The male narrator (who thankfully only did the prolgoue and epilogue) was absolutely terrible!!

Just as riveting as the book!!

I purchased the hard cover version of this book years ago and I loved it; but, of course, there were many words I couldn't figure out how to pronounce and that frustrated me. Not an "I hate this book" frustration, but a "I will have to just make it up in my head" frustration and I'm quite sure my imagination didn't do it justice. Now that I got a chance to hear someone who probably researched how to say these words properly, the book was even more enjoyable!! I loved the narrator's representation of each character and how she put feeling into each joke, sad feeling and other emotional situations. I'd fully and happily recommend this to other people!!

Enchanting and seductive

At first I thought the premise was weird and a bit of a stretch from what I've been reading lately, but the story is really full and I feel immersed in it. I like both of the main characters. I like how Ren speaks. Its funny, but everything he says sounds inadvertently sexual to me. But overall, I enjoy the quest theme to the book. I'm anxious to see where their adventures will lead to next, and I'm interested in reading the series now.
I felt a little let down with the ending, though. I just feel like a lot of the series books nowadays never have endings, like the authors can't complete a story, or don't know where to stop. But that's just an overall thought.
This book ended with a bit of something wanting, but it was pretty much satisfying. I wanted Kelsey and Ren to get together, but Ren is seductive and... Dangerous, like Kelsey describes in the book. I can see a very demanding controlling manipulative relationship coming from this. Like Edward and Bella. ...And Jacob, too. Because there is an obvious love triangle happening, as well. I will be continuing the series soon.
