Editorial reviews

Not much has changed in the young adult fiction world since the Twilight Saga hit the bookshelves, charming tweens and beyond with a story of lustful romance with a supernatural bent. Waves of like-minded narratives have been riding the coattails of the famous series' roaring success, but few are as thrilling and unique as Colleen Houck's Tiger's Curse. An enchanting story that takes place primarily in India (a setting ripe with potential for the vivid descriptions Houck delivers), Tiger's Curse is grounded in Indian mythology and culture. Annika Boras narrates with Sanjiv Jahveri, and they more than meet the challenges of performing a contemporary story told in a mysterious, foreign setting.

When 17-year-old orphan Kelsey attends a local summer job fair, she feels that nothing is beneath her. One week later, she finds herself temping at a circus, where she is tasked with caring for an unusually docile white tiger named Ren. Given how smoothly Kelsey is able to care for Ren, she is asked to accompany him on his transport to India, where he will return to his owner. With nothing left for her at home, Kelsey seizes the opportunity for this unique experience. She soon discovers that Ren is in fact not a tiger, but a handsome prince trapped by a curse cast upon him many years ago. The story quickly evolves into an engrossing romance between Kelsey and Ren, with a race against time to break the tiger's curse.

Between the exotic Indian landscapes and the Indiana Jones-like obstacles Kelsey and Ren walk into, Boras has plenty of colorful material to work with. From her astonished reaction at discovering of the tiger's true identity to her calculated determination as she pieces together how to break the curse, Boras approaches every scene with keen awareness of her character. Such is a testament to her erudite storytelling. Listening to her tackle such a diverse array of description, setting, and characters is the best way to experience this novel. Tiger's Curse will leave you breathless for days. —Suzanne Day

"A smart, vibrant adventure romance wrapped in a quest… takes the protagonists through adventures that would make Steven Spielberg proud… Full of danger, dash, allegory, and love under the banana tree." ( Kirkus Reviews)

Like Twilight on Crack & Better

It's like Twilight, but better. I appreciate the love story. Sometimes the descriptors of situations seemed a bit forced, lots of adjectives used so it made it cringy. loved the actions scenes though and the cultural information throughout. LOVED the narration, absolutely beautiful accents.

Wonderful book full of mythology and adventure!

This is the first book in The Tiger Saga. There are currently four books in this series, with a fifth book (The Tiger’s Dream) planned to release in 2015 sometime (although it seems like this book has been pushed back quite a few times). I have had this book forever to read. I was actually surprised at how much I loved this book. The Indian mythology incorporated throughout the story is very cool and something I haven’t read much about before. I also loved the tomb-raider style adventures.

I listened to this on audiobook and the audiobook was very very well done. The narrator does an excellent job with the accents of different characters, adds a lot of emotion to the characters’ voices, and had very distinctive voices for all of the characters. This is definitely a series I can recommend listening to on audiobook if you love audiobooks.

Kelsey is looking for a temporary summer job and finds one at a circus helping to care for the animals there. This is how she meets Ren, a white tiger in the circus who seems lonely. Ren and Kelsey strike up a tiger/human friendship of sorts. Then to Kelsey’s surprise a man shows up to buy Ren and asks if Kelsey would be willing to accompany Ren back to India to a wildlife reserve. This is when things get strange. Kelsey finds out that Ren is really a young man cursed to be a tiger and he needs her help breaking a 300 year old Indian curse.

I was impressed with Kelsey as a character and really enjoyed reading about her. She was so level-headed and took things in stride so easily. She is smart and practical and very mature for her age. I did have a bit of problem with the whole “Oh, sure I’ll fly off to India and go on tomb-raider quest, no problem!” thing. I thought it was a bit improbable especially considering how practical Kelsey is in other areas of her life, but once I got past that I really enjoyed the story.

Ren was a wonderful character and the romance between him and Kelsey is very well done. I will admit I wanted to smack the two of them at points. But they have great chemistry together and are dealing with some very unique relationship issues. I really enjoyed that Kelsey had a great relationship with Ren the tiger, but that is was a lot different from her relationship with Ren the man. That totally makes sense and I love that Kelsey and Ren the man had to have time to get to know and like each other as well.

There is a lot of wonderful tomb-raider style adventure in here which I absolutely loved. The traps and trials that Kelsey and Ren had to go through were very interesting, exciting, and creative (and definitely things I am happy I will never have to do).

I also really loved the Indian mythology woven throughout the story. This is a mythology I don’t know a lot about, so it was very cool to read about it in this book.

Overall I really loved this book to pieces. It’s definitely a well done young adult fantasy, with a number of elements I really enjoyed. I look forward to reading the next book in the series. This is a young adult book I think adults will enjoy too. There is a lot of adventure and mythology and mystery, as well as some romance and fantasy elements. Definitely recommended; I wish I had read this sooner!

Great for the road trip with the family.

Where does Tiger's Curse rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

I would rank this book near the top. It is the longest book we have listened to in the car and it was excellent for our entire vacation. The performance was excellent, the story was great and the writing was amazing.

What other book might you compare Tiger's Curse to and why?

It reminded me a little of the Da Vinci Code, the strange adventures and the romance, but with a teem as a main character.

What about Annika Boras and Sanjiv Jahveri ’s performance did you like?

Annika did most of the story, about 95% and she had excellent voices for every character. She really acted the parts as well, great job.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

We are listening to book #2 on our next road trip.

Any additional comments?

Great book, I would like to have a little less of the romantic stress between the main characters, but I still love it.

Very slow in Beginning! Performance was very good.

This book did not need to be so long it could have been cut down by half if the author did not go into extreme detail about screens that was self explanatory and did not make the story more interesting or better. Example there was no reason to give detail of the female led taking a shower on the plane or just detail about random stuff that did not enhance the story in any way. She does get better by the end of the story but a the first 1/3 of the story is very annoying. The performance from the narrator was amazing 👏 🙌. I will tell you that she pronounced all the Indian names and language wrong the reason I know is because my husband is from India and was listening and correctly telling me how to pronounce all the name and so forth but because that the main female lead is an American girl and she said the Indian name with an American accent I think it was ok. I did like the story over all despite its flaws. It was still interesting and it picks up pase half through the story. I also liked the romance in the story but became very frustrated with the Femal lead at the end. the Female lead is extremely naive and I feel her emotions at the end of the story don't make any sense and that it is obvious that the author over dramatized her negative emotions toward the male lead to stretch the story to make more books. Honestly if feel this should not have been turned into a muti book series the story already feels dragged and over complicated for no reason other. I don't know if I will read the other books. by the end I hated the Female lead so much for to me being and ungrateful horrible brat that I don't know if it is worth it to read any more. I have not decided yet. I tried not to give any spoiler away but this book was alittle bit of a let down by the end.

Love the premise!

Such a great idea for a book! The adventure and mythology is wonderful and the author can write a fantastic romance/love scene. A female Indiana Jones meets hot Indian weretigers! I enjoyed the little bits of literature slipped into the plot. I plowed straight through the whole series.

Now for the bad: Poorly edited, overly drawn out plots, a strange mix of childish and adult language and themes, everybody is a Mary Sue.

Overall, you will roll your eyes - a lot. But you may be having too much fun to care.

Very Compelling, Beautiful and Imaginative!

I love this story and was completely drawn in by the atmosphere and geography, the beautiful writing, and the powerful love story developing between the characters. As any other fan of the story knows, it's not simple and it's not over yet (I haven't quite completed the next two installments) but still, I have been very drawn in by the love story of Ren and Kelsey, and I've become invested in things turning out happily for them..but it's not going to be easy along the way.
The writing is very good, the descriptions are original and the plot actually interesting, flowing from one event to another. Yes, there is some time spent by the main character describing some simple things, or "gushing" about how beautiful Ren is, (remember this is YA, after all!) but still Kelsey is a charming character who will win you over. Yes, there are moments when she is stubborn and annoying, but yet the writing is good and it seems that's how she is meant to be, and it's meant to carry the story along, because as fans know it's quite a saga and is not wrapped up in one book.
I found the narrator to be quite talented and spot-on for the story. She certainly drew you right into Kelsey's mind and did a nice job of voicing the other characters, including the romantic Ren. Overall, a great story!

Best book I've listened to in a long time.

Would you listen to Tiger's Curse again? Why?

Most certainly! The book is written so well that you visualize all that is going on, you are swept into the story and I easily found myself "feeling" the emotions of the adventure.

Have you listened to any of Annika Boras and Sanjiv Jahveri ’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

no

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

The book has most certainly made me laugh, cry, and build with anticipation that could drive one crazy!
