Publisher's summary

Clay Jensen returns home from school to find a strange package with his name on it lying on his porch. Inside he discovers several cassette tapes recorded by Hannah Baker, his classmate and crush, who committed suicide two weeks earlier. Hannah's voice explains that there are 13 reasons she decided to end her life. Clay is one of them. If he listens, he'll find out why.

Clay spends the night crisscrossing his town with Hannah as his guide. He becomes a first-hand witness to Hannah's pain, and learns the truth about himself - a truth he never wanted to face.

Critic reviews

“[Hannah’s] pain is gut-wrenchingly palpable.... Asher has created an entrancing character study and a riveting look into the psyche of someone who would make this unfortunate choice. A brilliant and mesmerizing debut from a gifted new author.” (Kirkus Reviews, starred review and Editor’s Choice)

“Heavy but compelling.... Asher’s novel asks us to look at how petty cruelty can deal crushing blows.” (Miami Herald)

“It is a brilliant debut that will leave readers feeling a sense of remorse for Hannah, guilt for Clay, and hope for the lasting lesson of the story.” (Bookazine)

Good for a one day read or a road trip.

The storyline is definitely interesting and very different. I listened to the whole book in one day. I however didn't enjoy the ending. felt like it ended abruptly and in my personal opinion the music at the end was a terrible decision. Other than that however, I highly recommend this book. Probably better to read than to listen too though.

Narrator

The style & voice of Hanna sounded so insincere that that it was more psycho than struggling teen. Story would have felt more authentic if I purchased the text and read it myself. I think it would make a great movie if produced by the right producer.

It's pretty good.

The Book took me a while to finish because I think of the way it's set up. In the tapes I was waiting for one specific person which didn't end up coming up for a long time. The overall book was good once you finished it but had boring parts.

Excellent Read

The book is excellent and presents the struggles a teenager can have with coping and how little things making coping difficult and when something more significant happens you struggle even more. It reminded me of the movie "It's a Wonderful Life" where Clarence the angel grants Jimmy Stewart's wish to see what happened if he was never born. The little things and the big things that he did had enormous impact. it is the same here....little things that seem trival to adults may have an enormous impact on kids and when that happen problems develop unless you are sedative too it. Well done and we'll performed!

Love the story. Hate the voice.

Particularly it's the voice playing Hannah I don't like. I didn't think she sounded her age and thought it was annoying enough to buy the actual book and read it instead. But if the voices don't bother you 10/10 would recommend it.
