Sydney Sage is an Alchemist, one of a group of humans who dabble in magic and serve to bridge the worlds of humans and vampires. They protect vampire secrets - and human lives.
In the aftermath of a forbidden moment that rocked Sydney to her core, she finds herself struggling to draw the line between her Alchemist teachings and what her heart is urging her to do. Then she meets alluring, rebellious Marcus Finch - a former Alchemist who escaped against all odds, and is now on the run. Marcus wants to teach Sydney the secrets he claims the Alchemists are hiding from her. But as he pushes her to rebel against the people who raised her, Sydney finds that breaking free is harder than she thought. There is an old and mysterious magic rooted deeply within her. And as she searches for an evil magic user targeting powerful young witches, she realizes that her only hope is to embrace her magical blood - or else she might be next.

"We're suckers for it." (Entertainment Weekly)
"Stands out from the crowded vampire genre." (Associated Press)
"An obvious pick for the literary lover of all things bloodsucking." (MTV's Hollywood Crush)
The series is starting to drag a bit, hopefully the predictable "twist" at the end revitalizes the series in future books.
Still an adequate escape from real life and definitely worth the read if you enjoy the genre.
26 year old super busy mom who loves paranormal romance, has a weakness for YA fiction, and is also slightly obsessed with vampires!
the romantic scenes with Sydney and Adrian! especially the dream kiss .. it was perfect!
yes, I have listened to the entire Vampire Academy series and the first two bloodlines books. Emily Shaffer delivered a wonderful performance once again! I love her character voices , especially Adrian's.
I loved the last chapter of this book! Richelle Mead really knows how to keep you guessing on what her characters will do and as usual I can't wait for the next book (she always drops a huge plot bomb at the end of each book).
I read the print version and listen to the audio edition. I enjoy it more that way.
The Sydney and Adrian moments, Sydney finally impressing what she wants and Hopper.
The Sydney and Adrian dream moment.
No, but I loved the whole book.
I love this series.
ABOUT TIME!!! S + A
Sydney and Adrian! Despite right or wrong in the eyes of others they go with their HEART!!!
I have listened and she is GREAT as always!!
Excited to read the next...
Keep them coming!!
My kids think it's funny when they hide my sanity...
I'm personally not done with this book but i can not believe no one has mentioned the lack of Adrain's accent?! Hello that is part of what makes listening to this book the best! I am really trying to "hear" past it and so far enjoying the story but whoever made the decision to change that was stupid! ~ Will update review when I'm done with book. But again can't believe I'm the only one this is bothering!
I enjoy reading series and very rarely read stand alone series. I mostly read romance and sci-fi & fantasy.
I'm not even going to tell you to read the series because by this point i hope you have gotten the message that I have not so subtly put out there and read the series!! This is the best of the series. And it was my favorite. Adrian was a major key player.
I lied, I do have something bad to say about the series..... The fourth book doesn't come out until November, and I tried I really did try not to read this one until closer to the release date (November 19, 2013), but I just couldn't it was too tempting not knowing.
I'm glad I did read the book it was so good and I really did enjoy the book the only problem now is waiting til November for the fourth book to come out. That is the only grievance I have with the book, other than that it was amazing and I plan on rereading the series again and again. For Adrian of course.
