Publisher's summary

In a future world, vampires reign. Humans are blood cattle. And one girl will search for the key to save humanity.

Allison Sekemoto survives in the Fringe, the outermost circle of a vampire city. By day, she and her crew scavenge for food. By night, any one of them could be eaten.

Some days, all that drives Allie is her hatred of them. The vampires who keep humans as blood cattle. Until the night Allie herself is attacked - and given the ultimate choice. Die or become one of the monsters.

Faced with her own mortality, Allie becomes what she despises most. To survive, she must learn the rules of being immortal, including the most important: go long enough without human blood, and you will go mad.

Then Allie is forced to flee into the unknown, outside her city walls. There she joins a ragged band of humans who are seeking a legend - a possible cure to the disease that killed off most of humankind and created the rabids, the mindless creatures who threaten humans and vampires alike.

But it isn't easy to pass for human. Especially not around Zeke, who might see past the monster inside her. And Allie soon must decide what - and who - is worth dying for.

Mad Max meets Sookie Stackhouse - FANTASTIC

Any additional comments?

I've probably gone through 40 to 50 audiobooks in the past five years and this is my favorite out of all genres. I was so disappointed when this book ended, and came here to download the second one before realizing it isn't out yet. What an amazing thrill ride. Loved it!

Great listen

Great story and narrator. Glad the characters evolved while some didn't, just like real people. Can't stand stories where the characters are a lil too immovable. Good dynamics and enough complexity to expand the plots beyond the main one. I was satisfied with the ending, happy and not happy.

Great first book! Different vampire tale

I was excited to find that this book was different than other vampire books I've read. In this case, the girl is the vampire, and she's stronger than most of the men in the story. Also, there are several different adventures along the way, and it keeps the book moving.

First, Allison is in a dystopian city in a small gang scavenging for food and avoiding rabid humans, vampires, and mole men. Then she becomes a vampire and travels with a group of humans, trying to hide her vampire-ism from them. Then they discover her and she tries to win their trust back. Then she goes to a different vampire city with human raiders. Then travels somewhere else. I loved that it didn't get stagnant. There was also lots of fighting and action, and the heroine was not weak.

As for the rest of the series, book two is worth reading, but starts to get a little boring with the character's inner thoughts and repetitive scenes. The third book can be skipped entirely in my opinion because it's just more of her inner thoughts and other repetitive scenes. No surprises or changes, just a boring ending.

I will also mention that there is a bit of torture and gruesome scenes throughout the series. It was a little disturbing, but manageable until it got repetitive later in the series.

great book

the author's writing style had me craving more. I am glad this is a series and will definitely read the others. Allie was such a strong character with great morals. she was more human than vampire. this story shows people of all ages that although we are very different we are still the same. the relationship between allie and kanin in this book made me think of the story of Abraham where he kept asking the man a whole bunch of questions when he should have observed more. with that being said I could see the growth of Allie and can't wait to read more

A Vampire being Human

What made the experience of listening to The Immortal Rules the most enjoyable?

I have always been a fan of vampires and vampire stories. I liked hearing the point of view of a newly turned vampire, who is still struggling to learn the ways of vampirism while maintaining her humanity.

What did you like best about this story?

Allie is struggling with so many things: how to be a vampire, how to remain human, how to remain aloof, and how to care about others. She comes a long way from what she refers to as "Allie the fringer" and I enjoyed seeing her grow, even in her struggles. I also liked seeing Zeke grow, even if it was from an outside perspective.

Which scene was your favorite?

It's difficult to choose just one scene, but (without any spoilers) I think it would be when they were maneuvering through Old Chicago.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

There were several. Allie goes through a lot as she leaves her old life behind. She struggles with having to suddenly fend for herself, betrayals, and more. You can't help but feel for her as most of her pain comes from trying to remain human, rather than becoming a heartless monster.

Gripping Throughout

Some might say.... Another Teen Vampire Story, filled with hopeless romantic love between vampire and victim.
However, this book had an interesting storyline and plot. The story held my attention throughout (gripping), as I wanted to find out what happens to the characters.... And yet the cliffhanger ending makes me want to follow the next book in serious.
The narrator, Therese Palmer, did an excellent job with the characters.

I'm Hooked!

What did you love best about The Immortal Rules?

The story is awesome! I listen to it on my long commute and I find myself sitting in my car when I get home! The narrator isn't Jim Dale, but very good and I am really enjoying the book.

Very entertaining

I love Julie Kagawa, she is a very tallented writer and has a way of explaining detail with great imagery. Though I think the vampire genre is a bit played out, this one has enough uniqueness to make it worth the listen. The lead character is great, a bit naive at times, but she gets herself together as the book progresses. Not at all a typical Ya vampire novel or story for that matter. No high school drama, or high school crush, in fact, no school at all. I enjoyed the book and listened to it all the way through. I can't wait for the next in the series. As always, Therese Plummer did an excellant job.
