Publisher's summary

“Rae Carson has proved she’s a master and has shaken up the YA genre.” (USAToday.com)

The first book in Rae Carson’s award-winning and New York Times best-selling trilogy!

The Girl of Fire and Thorns is a sweeping journey full of adventure, sorcery, heartbreak, and power. Fans of George R. R. Martin’s Game of Thrones and Leigh Bardugo’s Grishaverse will devour this fantasy series.

Once a century, one person is chosen for greatness. Elisa is the chosen one. But she has always felt powerless, useless. Now, on her 16th birthday, she has become the secret wife of a handsome and worldly king - a king whose country is in turmoil. A king who needs her to be the chosen one, not a failure of a princess.

And he’s not the only one who seeks her. Fierce enemies, seething with dark magic, are hunting her. A daring, determined revolutionary thinks she could be his people’s savior. Soon it is not just her life, but her very heart that is at stake.

Elisa could be everything to those who need her most. If the prophecy is fulfilled. If she finds the power deep within herself. If she doesn’t die young. Most of the chosen do.

Great narrator. Not so great main character.

Loved the narrator. Main character is an adolescent so she is more a victim of circumstance rather than the creater of it. I suspect she will grow stronger in the following books.

okay

There were parts of this book I really loved but they didn't come to past the halfway mark there were only a few moments after. After the moment that broke my heart it seesawed between great and boring. I loved Umberto (hopefully that's spelled write) Hector and Rosario mostly but I also loved Elisa and Alejandro. The great moments were enough to recommend this book. The narration was excellent.

LOVE. love.

Would you listen to The Girl of Fire and Thorns again? Why?

I have already listened to The Girl of Fire and Thorns numerous times! I just can't get enough. And each time I listen to it I find something new I missed before and I'm equally enthralled listening into hours of the night. Sound crazy? No, just a crazy good book. There is so much movement within the story that it feels like you're listening to a whole series at once, but yet it still goes by so fast!

What other book might you compare The Girl of Fire and Thorns to and why?

There is no other book of the kind. It's part book of Revelations- yet with Spanish culture and religious influence- with a dash of futuristic "after this world" magic- and a little Lord of the Rings.

Which character – as performed by Jennifer Ikeda – was your favorite?

My favorite character in this book in the series is the main character- Elisa. I really couldn't stand her much at first but the writing was so good that I was captured into her world. Slowly Elisa changed, and so did my view and opinion of her. She became someone that would likely be my friend if she were real and someone that I would admire and respect. A great example of a humble servant ruler, not afraid to get her hands dirty, and certainly not a girly girl.

Young Female Minds

Definitely for young females. Lacks natural relationship and expose of human nature.

Tension is what one would expect from a young teens mind.

I loved this book. It has a little of everything. War, religion, love, sadness, happiness, etc. It's a great story. I can't wait to discuss it at our next book club meeting.

Surprisingly Good

While the first fifth began slowly, this book picked up fast. I'm already about to be done with the final book in the series in less than a month.

I really enjoyed this book and the story line.

Must read, lot of plots and twist. I love the story line. A little romance, little action, and very warming. Definitely a strong women role.

Very religious

The story is alright if you don't mind it being completely centered around God and praying. The performance was great though.
