Publisher's summary

The recently orphaned Sisters Grimm find out from their Granny, who they thought was dead, that they're descendents of the legendary Brothers Grimm. Now they must take over the family responsibility of being fairy tale detectives in a town where fairy tales are real. Their first case: a giant is destroying the town and it may have something to do with a boy named Jack and a certain famous beanstalk.

Great Fun

Buckley recreates traditional fairy tales and turns them into the setting of a film noir, making readers think critically about who is the culprit of the crime. The novel would be wonderful for story time where students can listen to the material as an audiobook and relax while listening to an engaging plot. Young readers would enjoy interacting with grittier fairy tale characters who the readers then have to detect who committed a grievous crime.

Fun Twist on Old Fairy Tales

This book is fun from start to finish. This is the first book in the series and I look forward to reading/listening to more. The characters are fun and the story is fast paced.

Funny twists

I liked this story. It is not a re-telling of fairy tales with different endings, but a story of how the fairy tale creatures are alive and living in a modern day time. Of course fairy tale creatures would have to deal with many things, and we certainly see the other side of their personalities. Not a deep drama, but a light hearted mystery with a different perspective.

If you like Roald Dahl books then you should like this one as well.

I’m in my twenties

I started reading these in when I was in 5th grade and absolutely fell in love. I read them to students now, and STILL enjoy them as an adult. Also L. J. Ganser is a phenomenal narrator!!

Worked well for the family on a long car ride

Entertaining story with a nice premise. All the Everafter creatures and people live in a US city under the guardianship of successive generations of the Grimm family. Nicely written and narrated but our family voted not to continue the series. 'Your mileage may vary.'

Mildly Entertaining

Listening to this was not the best use of 6+ hours, but I was moderately interested most of the way through. Even though transplanting fairty-tale characters into a remote corner of modern America sounds like a recipe for great creativity, it seemed, instead, to be immensely predictable. There was nothing offered to enrich any of the characters, they just seemed to robotocically perform for a modern adventure of sorts. I like few things better than really beautiful and/or creative children's literature, and I felt this offered neither quality. At the same time, the adventure moved along at a nice pace and kept me somewhat involved.

Funny childrens book

This is a book for children, and adults do not have to like it. The concept is funny and quirky. A nice and easy going book accessible to most children. And if they like it, there are more in the series which is a great gift idea.

Entertaining

What did you like best about The Fairy-Tale Detectives? What did you like least?

This was an imaginative story that would best appeal to younger readers. I liked it but it doesn???t have the wide appeal of books like Harry Potter that have characters that will also appeal to an adult audience.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

The story is great. Can???t say I???d change anything in the plot. I???d just like to see more character development.

What does L. J. Ganser bring to the story that you wouldn???t experience if you just read the book?

Ganser???s voices were entertaining. I???m glad I did this one audible.
