It began on New Year’s Eve. The sickness came on suddenly, and spread quickly. The fear spread even faster. Within weeks, everything people counted on began to fail them. The electrical grid sputtered; law and government collapsed - and more than half of the world’s population was decimated. Where there had been order, there was now chaos. And as the power of science and technology receded, magick rose up in its place.

Publisher's summary
The Passage meets Ender's Game in an epic new series from award-winning author Rick Yancey.
After the first wave, only darkness remains. After the second, only the lucky escape. And after the third, only the unlucky survive. After the fourth wave, only one rule applies: Trust no one.
Now, it's the dawn of the fifth wave, and on a lonely stretch of highway, Cassie runs from Them. The beings who only look human, who roam the countryside killing anyone they see. Who have scattered Earth's last survivors. To stay alone is to stay alive, Cassie believes, until she meets Evan Walker.
Beguiling and mysterious, Evan Walker may be Cassie's only hope for rescuing her brother - or even saving herself. But Cassie must choose: between trust and despair, between defiance and surrender, between life and death. To give up or to get up.

To everyone else it's Dragonscale, a highly contagious, deadly spore that marks its hosts with beautiful black and gold marks across their bodies - before causing them to burst into flames. Tate and his father don't exactly get along. As Tate sees it, his father has unreasonably high expectations for Tate to be the best - at everything. Tate finally learns what he's being prepared for when he steals one of his dad's odd tech inventions and mercenaries ambush the school, killing his father in the process and sending Tate on the run from aliens who look just like humans. Even with all he knows, like how to defend himself with useful tools made out of bubblegum, Tate fears he's still inadequate.

Story
The Bourne Identity meets Divergent in this action-packed debut thriller with a Katniss-esque heroine fighting to regain her memories and stay alive, set against a dystopian hospital background.
Sarah starts a crazy battle for her life within the walls of her hospital-turned-prison when a procedure to eliminate her memory goes awry and she starts to remember snatches of her past. Was she an urban terrorist or vigilante? Has the procedure been her salvation or her destruction?
The answers lie trapped within her mind. To access them, she'll need the help of the teen computer hacker who's trying to bring the hospital down for his own reasons, and a pill that's blocked by an army of mercenary soldiers poised to eliminate her for good. If only she knew why…
"This is a snap-the-whip story, dark and fast. The sparks of humor in the voice won me over. Bottom line: I think the cocktail of suspense and believable smart-assery adds up to an addictive dose of reader appeal." —Blythe Woolston, author of the William C. Morris Award winner The Freak Observer

Now, they are both rising stars in the new regime, despite backgrounds that couldn't be more different. Annie's lowborn family was executed by dragonfire, while Lee's aristocratic family was murdered by revolutionaries. AD 2150: Chris Randall just lost his job as a bodyguard. That night, after picking up his wife, Bree, from her shift at a local casino, he breaks the bad news. Moments later, thunder cracks the sky, but there’s no lightning. Flaming debris rain across the valley, and a dark mass goes sailing out of the clouds, headed straight for LA. A pretty good read!
Is there anything you would change about this book?
This reminds me of the Host BUT its good!! It's not 5,000 pages of boring emptiness. It keeps your attention and isn't pretentious like Ms. Meyers book. I enjoyed the characters and their struggles. A bit of a lovey story was annoying (only bc I don't like them) but was bearable bc it wasn't all frilly and obnoxious again like the Host was bleck! I generally like when books change points of view but for some reason I didn't enjoy that aspect in this book I liked Cassie's POV and found myself enjoying those chapters more than others. All in all s good book but not something I will obsess about!

Worth the read.
The narration was done well. Very clear. As a story, the information was put together very well. This was a easy book to follow along and interact within the story.

Great narration and great story. I wish the story went on a little bit longer. Left me wondering a few things. Is there going to be a part 2?

pretty good. i wasn't expecting a love story.
when i purchased this audio book i was expecting something totally different. like a independence day or full on apocalypse action packed book. wasn't expecting a love story. still pretty good with a decent amount of action.

Target audience: teenagers
I listened to it because I payed for it and it was pretty good as far as the plot and action but unless you want teen romance don't buy.

Pleasantly surprised!
I'm not a big a sci-fi fan but this was more about relationships and what makes us human. Who the aliens where reminded me of the host.

Movie or Book
This book is amazing. I had such high hopes after seeing the movie and the book had blown my hopes away. There is a little bit of a slow intro, but you end up falling in love with this book regardless
