Publisher's summary

NOW A PRIME VIDEO SERIES from internationally bestselling author Harlan Coben

Mickey Bolitar's year can't get much worse. After witnessing his father's death and sending his mom to rehab, he's forced to live with his estranged uncle Myron and switch high schools.

A new school comes with new friends and new enemies, and lucky for Mickey, it also comes with a great new girlfriend, Ashley. For a while, it seems like Mickey's train-wreck of a life is finally improving—until Ashley vanishes without a trace. Unwilling to let another person walk out of his life, Mickey follows Ashley's trail into a seedy underworld that reveals that this seemingly sweet, shy girl isn't who she claimed to be. And neither was Mickey's father. Soon, Mickey learns about a conspiracy so shocking that it makes high school drama seem like a luxury—and leaves him questioning everything about the life he thought he knew.

First introduced to readers in Harlan Coben's adult novel, Live Wire, Mickey Bolitar is as quick-witted and clever as his uncle Myron, and eager to go to any length to save the people he cares about. With this series, Coben introduces an entirely new generation of fans to the masterful plotting and wry humor that have made him an award-winning, internationally bestselling, and beloved author.

Great suspense, unfolds perfectly, just long enough

Liked all the books I've read by this author and this one is another winner for me. The high school setting and characters were easy to relate to as well and I'm in my thirties

Nice for youth read

I bought this by mistake not knowing it was a young teen's read. Since I was on vacation and did not have another book downloaded I listened to it anyway.
It was a good story, good character development. Actually, made me wonder what will happen to these main characters in future books.

Mickey Bolitar is a great kid

I was skeptical about trying what I thought would be essentially a young person's novel, but Mickey Bolitar was an interesting and entertaining character and the plot was great. I missed Mylitar and Win, but Mickey has what it takes to be a stand-alone character in his own right. I'll read another Mickey novel, but I'm not waiting with baited breath like I do for the Mylitar and Win series.

"Young Adult" for adults too

This is another book that could be primarily considered "Young Adult" that crosses over for adults that just want a more simplistic, youthful time in a book. It doesn't really talk down to the older adult readers and it's not over the heads of the young adults. The primary characters are kids, but they are the outcast kids that you can kind of relate to. The plot is good and the ending leaves you ready for the next installment.

Had to try it...

After years of Harlan Coben's Myron Bolitar novels I had to try this, even though I haven't loved since they switched readers from Jonathan Marosz, and since the plots and writing have inevitably declined. Not a bad purchase, but I did not like the fact that while it stands alone it definitely benefits from having read the Myron-based novel as well. Also, while "Mickey" is not "Myron" the kid says some things that no child today would ever utter. And background facts are randomly strewn about to fit the plot, making it all seem a bit forced and written under a deadline.

Nevertheless, the mystery element of the book was fine, the characters were likable, and it was well-read and enjoyable. So 3.3-3.5 stars. If you like Harlan Coben, you'll like this (not love it) but listen to it anyway :)
