Publisher's summary

Surrounded by enemies, the once-great nation of Ravka has been torn in two by the Shadow Fold, a swath of near impenetrable darkness crawling with monsters who feast on human flesh. Now its fate may rest on the shoulders of one lonely refugee.

Alina Starkov has never been good at anything. But when her regiment is attacked on the Fold and her best friend is brutally injured, Alina reveals a dormant power that saves her life—a power that could be the key to setting her war-ravaged country free. Wrenched from everything she knows, Alina is whisked away to the royal court to be trained as a member of the Grisha, the magical elite led by the mysterious Darkling.

Yet nothing in this lavish world is what it seems. With darkness looming and an entire kingdom depending on her untamed power, Alina will have to confront the secrets of the Grisha… and the secrets of her heart.

3/5 🌟

...I wasn't as big a fan as I was expecting to be...I think that's why I can't give this more than a three out of five.

I have read Leigh Bardugo's short stories. They are wonderfully vivid and memorable. Highly recommend those.

This story, to me, wasn't what I expected. I felt little for these characters, which really surprised me.

The plot didn't captivate me.

The love story felt, off...or flat.

I think it's a me thing...

All Around Wonderful!

I admit that I wasn't sure at first about this book but I'm glad I gave it a chance. Fortgang was wonderful and the story was thrilling. I had a hard time putting it down. I really love the character development and the story arch, it kept me on the edge of my seat. If you enjoy a story with magic and continually developing characters then this book is the perfect fit for your library. So Worth it.

Great YA Fantasy

If you're looking for an enjoyable YA fantasy that is an easy, fast read and has interesting characters and a creative premise, then this is the book for you! At times it is not the most innovative, as I recognize themes from other books (although the author does present them in a different way in several places), but overall it was really enjoyable and just what I needed to keep me occupied during a long plane ride and on my runs. I like that it is set in a fantasy world that has many similarities to, and is clearly based on, Russia. I plan to read the entire trilogy.

Absolutely Wonderful Start to an AWESOME Trilogy!!

I think this narrator does an absolutely wonderful job with the names and the different voices. This is one of my favorite trilogies. There is no explicit content, and it is perfect for any YA reader!

Love this book

My most favorite book in my life so far, I read it when I was 12 years old before starting 8th grade. The book was an option to be read for summer reading and i loved it. I read the whole book in just under 2 weeks before school started back up.

Cool world ruined by uninteresting characters

My first YA novel since I was a teen and while it was okay, I didn't love it.

I enjoyed the world that the novel takes place in and feel like it had a lot of potential but the characters weren't great and there was a lot of eye-rolling and yelling at characters on my part. The main character is one of the least interesting characters and has a habit of being contrary just for the sake of being contrary- even when it works against her own interest. Some of the plot is predicable as well.

In terms of the Grisha series vs the Six of Crows series: Now that I've read both I can say that I enjoyed the Six of Crows books better. They both take place in the same world but the Six of Crows series takes place after the Grisha series so if you also didn't love the Grisha series I can at least recommend that. It's up to you if you want to read the Grisha books first but know that there is some spoilers for the end of the Grisha series in the Six of Crows books.

Awesome read.

Narration was great, plot was excellent. Bought this after I finished "six of crows" and I was not disappointed.
