Publisher's summary

The second novel in the Virals trilogy from the number-one best-selling author and inspiration for the TV series Bones - Kathy Reichs!

Ever since Tory Brennan and her friends rescued Cooper, a kidnapped wolf pup with a rare strain of canine parvovirus, they've turned from regular kids into a crime-solving pack! But now the very place that brought them together - the Loggerhead Island Research Institute - is out of funding and will have to shut down. That is, unless the Virals can figure out a way to save it!

So when Tory learns of an old Charleston legend about a famous she-pirate, Anne Bonney, whose fortune was never found, she can't believe her luck - buried treasure is exactly what she needs to save the Institute on Loggerhead! Trouble is, she and her friends aren't the only ones looking for it. And this time, the Virals' special powers may not be enough to dig them out of trouble.

More of a preteen book

What disappointed you about Seizure?

No disappointment. Thought this was a teen book and the simplicity of story appropriate for preteen audience based on our teens reading list and maturity. The characters were cute, spunky. Even with the characters special traits, this story lacked the complexity for our young teen. It was a cute adventure.

How would you have changed the story to make it more enjoyable?

Not applicable. It was pleasant for the this type of story.

What three words best describe Cristin Milioti’s performance?

Pitched very young

Definitely YA

Any additional comments?

I thoroughly enjoyed Virals. However, Seizure was not near as interesting. There was more find-the-pirate-treasure "adventure" with only bits and pieces of the core storyline--- the abilities of the Virals. This is another one of those series in which the author seems as interested in stretching out the series as she does in developing characters and moving the plot along. I have stopped and started this one several times while reading other novels in between. I want to finish it, but I'm struggling to stay interested.

Also, I am a high school English teacher, so I frequently preview YA books for my class. I was fascinated with Hunger Games and just as impressed with Divergent. I thought this series may be along those lines, but I can imagine readers losing interest halfway through this one.

Like watching alpha posturing in the dog park

I'm not sure if this book get's better. It lost me in the second chapter when the teenage pack was busy explaining how special they were. Really lost me. Normally Rechs is a much better writer.
