Thomas Ward is the apprentice for the local Spook, who captures witches and drives away ghosts. As the weather gets colder and the nights draw in, the Spook receives an unexpected visitor. Tom doesn't know who the stranger is or what he wants, but the Spook suddenly decides it's time to travel to his winter house, Anglezarke. Tom has heard it will be a bleak, forbidding place, and that menacing creatures are starting to stir somewhere on the moors nearby.
Can anything prepare Tom for what he finds there? What if the rumors about the evil beast called the Golgoth are true? And how much danger will Tom be in if the secrets the Spook has been trying to hide from the world are revealed?

This is the third book in this series and the last book currently available on Audible (perhaps the last book currently written). I really enjoyed this series and can't wait for more.
I've found user reviews to be very important when trying to decide whether I should purchase an audio book or not, so I've felt compelled to leave my comments and recommendations for this series. They are great stories (even though they are actually young adult books) and are read by an excellent reader who seriously enhances the audio book experience with his narrative skills.
Joseph Delaney's work so far is getting better and better with each book. His stories are well written and the plot will keep you guessing till the end. The idea of having the story told by his young apprentice makes for an interesting view point. i.e. he makes mistakes and must find his own way out. Recommend also Garth Nix, and Jasper Fforde.
I absolutely love this series! I don't have kids, and I'm in my late 30's, yet I find this very entertaining and addictive. Even for adults it is gripping and frightening at times. I think it might even be a bit much for some kids, though I know I would have loved it when I was young. Definitely a good read for all ages if you like tales of the supernatural.
Can't wait for the next book to come out!
Nothing like a good ghost story and the first three books have been Great! The narrator is fantastic and sas great charicter voices. I look forward to listening to the rest!
The reading by Christopher Evan Welch is enchanting, and the story without his performance, is just not the same. Great book!
Welch's performance is still the best I have heard on audio book. It is always en enjoyable experience to listen to these stories.
the best series so far.
No, but he is perhaps the best we have heard yet
The books from the beginning work are almost seamless in their delivery, therefore all the terrifying events run together
Mr. Delaney, because of his history background, and his ability to draw ancient information about the dark, spins wonderful tales that require lights out, candles on, and get your scary on. We plan to read each and every one available. The marriage of a great author and a wonderful narrator cannot be understated. P.S. These books are not for the faint of heart, and although they are officially rated as young adult, we older folks are enjoying them immensely.
The series has a great premise and had a great start...but a lot of the tropes just get old and tired by the third book. The spook is grouchy and makes hateful decisions, Tom has to come through when the Spook gets hurt/sick/captured, etc....and I swear to god, if this author uses the phrase "My heart sank into my boots" one more time, I'll burn the next hard copy of this series I find.
Great book, great series, great narration. Not for kids at all in my opinion!! Really dark and the further you get in the series the darker it gets. Please read before letting your kids get into this series. Great for adults though!
