Publisher's Summary

My sister Rose lives on the mantelpiece.

Well, some of her does.

A collarbone, two ribs, a bit of skull, and a little toe.

To 10-year-old Jamie, his family has fallen apart because of the loss of someone he barely remembers: his sister Rose, who died five years ago in a terrorist bombing. To his father, life is impossible to make sense of when he lives in a world that could so cruelly take away a 10-year-old girl. To Rose's surviving 15-year-old twin, Jas, every day she lives in Rose's ever-present shadow, forever feeling the loss like a limb, but unable to be seen for herself alone.

Told with warmth and humor, this powerful story is a sophisticated take on one family's struggle to make sense of the loss that's torn them apart...and their discovery of what it means to stay together.

    "Excellent narration"

The narrator brought characters to life beautifully, and added to the richness of the story. I also appreciated the musical interludes between chapters; it allowed for breathing space, giving the listener a break from the tension of the story.

"Purchased for the narrator, but found it excellent"

I grabbed this book after searching for David Tennant. While the narration was wonderful, I was amazed at how moving I found the story to be. There were plenty of times that I found myself smiling or laughing, and in one spot completely bawling.

David Tennant is also quite a talented narrator - I listened to this during a long distance drive, travelling at fast speeds on the open highway, in a car that doesn't have great sound proofing. I never had to fiddle with the volume. David Tennant was able to communicate the full range of the characters emotions with a clear, even tone, that many can't master.

This is a touching, well written story. I'll be looking for more from the author.

    "Amazing!"
What made the experience of listening to My Sister Lives on the Mantelpiece the most enjoyable?

This well written book took me to the rural English countryside, back to elementary school and back to the planet through the remarkable eyes of a wonderful ten year old boy. David Tennant honored that boy with the best character reading I think I've ever heard on any audible book recording. I laughed and cried and was strengthened by this tale. It's so funny, and so sad and so very uplifting.

Who was your favorite character and why?

I think Sonia (sp?) was my favorite. What an amazing, tenacious character. She is brave and strong and wise way beyond her years, but Pitchard still managed to create her as a ten year old girl.

    Which scene was your favorite?

This is another tough question. There were so many wonderful scenes. I love how Pitchard described the sun coming into the car on the way to the contest as 'inside of an egg yolk'. My favorite has to be the saddest scene though, where Jamie finds his cat and understands what his father is dealing with. What a beautiful and poignant was to describe a boy growing into an empathetic young man.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

    Yes

    Any additional comments?

I'll listen to anything that David Tennent reads (except Doctor Who books. I think that's beneath him.)

You will cry. It's that simple -- David Tennant will take Annabel Pitcher's words and slowly tear at your heartstrings. Wonderful story, wonderful reader, an amazing listen.

"Ordered for the narration, but book is charming"

I ordered this book because I love David Tennant's audio performances, and he doesn't disappoint here. I love that he doesn't have different voices for the different characters, but distinguishes them by the changing the quality of his voice. My only niggle was that he used his own Scottish accent rather than using an English one.

The book itself is charming and well written, but I think many of the characters are rather flatly portrayed (although this may be intentional as the narrator is a 10-year old boy). Also, at times the boy seems much younger than 10 years old, to the point where it's a bit unrealistic. Even so, I still like the book because it feels like an honest, simple, and moving depiction of how young people deal with tragedy--of any kind.

In short, well done and certainly worth a listen!

"Buy it for DT, stay for the story"

I bought this to hear David Tennant's gorgeous voice on a long trip. DT fans know exactly what to expect with his performance and will not be disappointed.

But the story itself...I laughed, I cried, I hoped, I felt disappointed...the story itself needed no help from DT. The characters leap out of the story into your imagination, and I could not stop listening...almost literally. I forgot to check my gas gauge and and looked down to see my range was down to 2 miles and had to contact my insurance to send for a fuel delivery.

Put the two together, a compelling storyline and David Tennant's narration, and it was dynamite.

"Heart wrenching story of loss and love"
    Any additional comments?

This book evokes such strong emotion.. hope, anguish, anxiety, loss, pure sadness, despair, love, and the true meaning of family.

This is the story about a family who loses a daughter. For the brother and sister they lose a sibling. It's hard to completely understand how losing a loved one can tear a family completely in two, but this book helps you to realize that it can do just that. It also helps you to understand how children of a young age find it extremely hard to understand and deal with loss. Just a heart wrenching story.

I know it's terrible, but one of the saddest parts is at the end where the little boy finds out that Roger (his cat) has been ran over & killed. You can truly feel the childs pain and how he is grieving not only for his cat, but also for his sister.

I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoys stories of true love, loss and family truly coming together and trying to understand how to cope with whatever life throws your way.

*you will need a couple boxes of kleenex for this one*

    "A delightful listen."

I would have enjoyed reading this book in print, as the story itself is wonderful. However, listening to David Tennant's narration adds a whole other layer.

This story is real, it's sad, and it's beautiful. Highly recommended if you're looking for an expertly crafted work that will leave you with a melancholy, knowing smile.
