Publisher's summary

The Garretts are everything the Reeds are not: loud, numerous, messy, affectionate. And every day from her balcony perch, 17-year-old Samantha Reed wishes she was one of them...until one summer evening, Jase Garrett climbs her terrace and changes everything. As the two fall fiercely in love, Jase's family makes Samantha one of their own. Then in an instant, the bottom drops out of her world and she is suddenly faced with an impossible decision. Which perfect family will save her? Or is it time she saved herself?

A well written coming of age book

This is my kind of story. This is what I love in books. A coming of age story featuring young adults finding their own voice and place, and good clean love!

I listened to this book literally all day until I finished. It was contemporary YA that felt like a historical romance because of the wholesome feel to the book. I am finding a lot of NA/YA authors are overloading their books with gratuitous sex and drinking, and it was so refreshing to read a book not focusing on any of that. There was love but it was that first kiss, first touch kind of love. That passion of first love which feels like a flower blooming in spring.

When I ask for recommendations, these are the types of books I am looking for. The types of books that leave me smiling and feeling all warm and fuzzy inside. I am definitely going to get the next book because while this one didn't end of a cliff hanger, there is clearly more story to be told.

Very enjoyable!

I really enjoyed this! I prefer for my books to not stereotype Republicans, so I took off a star. The narrator did a great job!

Very Sweet

Any additional comments?

What a great book! Samantha and Jase were absolutely adorable, good, hardworking, very mature 17 year olds. The Garrett brood were so cute and hilarious particularly little George. This story will teach you the importance of family, friendship, love, and doing the right thing. Being truthful even if it means to lose what you love and that some people are willing to stick by you no matter what. I would have given this 5 stars but I felt the end was somewhat abrupt. I hope there is a sequel to see how things turn out for Samantha and Jase, the Senator, the Garrett's and all the rest of the clan.

Really slow book

This was the slowest paced book I think I've ever listened to. I was struggling until about chapter 30 when things finally picked up and it got interesting. The dialogue was narrated well, but the rest of the text was read off like a robot. It sounded like my Alexa was reading to me through most of it. It was a good story, but not my cup of tea.

Perfect.

Such a great story for any age. Loved these characters. Didn't want the book to end. Loved George and all the chaos next door.

Loved it!!

I absolutely loved this book! My only critique was it ended! I would love to read more about Jase and Sam, and the whole Garrett family. There are so many stories left to be told with this family.

I've had better

This book wasn’t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

The book itself wasn't bad, it just wasn't that good. I didn't enjoy the narration very much. I don't really know who this would appeal to more.

What was the most interesting aspect of this story? The least interesting?

Most interesting...hmmm. Probably for me the outsiders view of people with large families. I come from a family of five kids, so not quite as big as the family in this story, but I remember being surprised in school when I told people how many siblings I had and them commenting that it was a lot. But we never really got comments from others like this family did, although I have close friends who have had that experience with their six kids. The least interesting to me... I guess maybe her relationship with her shallow little best friend. And I cringed every time they said her name. Nan, Nano, Nanny...ugh, sorry but it was annoying the way they used it.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Amy Rubinate?

I don't know who specifically, but someone a little younger sounding and someone with a little more inflection in their voice. I thought she was a tiny bit monotone.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from My Life Next Door?

A lot of the parts with Nan.

Great story: well developed

The unfolding tale of a fortunate young lady who knows right from wrong. She is not spoiled, but aware. It was a pleasure to share her experiences.

One of my Favorite Books!

I read this a couple of years ago, and I still think about scenes in the book. I have listened several times. Well developed characters and a unique storyline while still giving you all the boy next door feels. I highly recommend this!
