Publisher's summary

One choice can transform you - or it can destroy you. But every choice has consequences, and as unrest surges in the factions all around her, Tris Prior must continue trying to save those she loves - and herself - while grappling with haunting questions of grief and forgiveness, identity and loyalty, politics and love.

Tris's initiation day should have been marked by celebration and victory with her chosen faction; instead, the day ended with unspeakable horrors. War now looms as conflict between the factions and their ideologies grows. And in times of war, sides must be chosen, secrets will emerge, and choices will become even more irrevocable - and even more powerful. Transformed by her own decisions but also by haunting grief and guilt, radical new discoveries, and shifting relationships, Tris must fully embrace her Divergence, even if she does not know what she may lose by doing so.

New York Times best-selling author Veronica Roth's much-anticipated second book of the dystopian Divergent series is another intoxicating thrill ride of a story, rich with hallmark twists, heartbreaks, romance, and powerful insights about human nature.

Good Book!

I liked the first book better, but it was still great! The only thing a didn’t like was the constant drama between Tobias and Tris. It felt like that drama had no character development for either of them, so why add in all those arguments and make it cringey??

Story was a difficult to follow at times.

I truly enjoy the narrator In this performance. She is very calm and easy to understand. Unlike the first book, I find this book difficult to follow the storyline at times and having to rewind and listen again.

LOVE THE STORY...the performance, not so much

Would you consider the audio edition of Insurgent to be better than the print version?

The print version is significantly preferable: Generally speaking, when considering audio books, female performers have a much harder time than male performers do at voicing characters of the opposite sex. This was especially valid in the reading of this book. Her male impersonations made an incredible story less believable for me.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Lynn is my favorite non-lead character because she doesn't care what anyone else thinks. She is who she is. What you see is what you get. AND she doesn't use her beauty as an advantage or for leverage. She views it as a disadvantage or sign of weakness; therefore, relies on her other characteristics/strengths to fulfill her role as a Dauntless. She does take it too far sometimes, but I really like her character.

Four/Tobias is the obvious lead character that I would be inclined to favor because of his role as the relentless, unyielding, selfless, compassionate yet strong hero and loving boyfriend. He is smarter than he leads you to believe he thinks he is, which gives him a distinctive social advantage. Finally, his ability to calculate his actions, harness his emotions (for the most part) and forgive when necessary, at times when most won't, give him a maturity well beyond his years, allowing him to lead at a young age.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I'm not sure she could have done much better with what she has. As stated before, my issue is with the impersonations of the male characters. Makes the story less believable.

Was this a book you wanted to listen to all in one sitting?

Yes, I had read it previously so I already knew I loved the story; however, when reliving the story audibly, it provides more depth and further understanding. Despite the less than ideal performance, I found myself making excuses to get in the car for lengthy drives in order to finish the book.

Any additional comments?

I just want to comment further about the vocal performance by the female artist. From the way I have expressed myself above, it may appear that I dislike her style far greater than I really do. At the end of the day, she did a phenomenal job bringing the female characters to life, and it was very believable (again, female characters). AND I will admit, the fact that I find her male impersonations unbelievable may be a ME problem. That said, that was the one thing that I found hard for me to wrap my head around, in terms of believability and overall rating.

Part 2 aka book 2

I really enjoyed book 2 it was a good way of growing the characters. I was surprised at the way the leader of abdagation was dealt with. The narrator did a great job.

What Does HOME Mean?

The tale picks up with the very next frame of the picture and the action never stops. The growth in the characters is evident, although I do wish Tris would stop bemoaning being just 16.

Continue with the friends you made in Divergent.

I can't stop listening...Roth has topped Divergent

Would you listen to Insurgent again? Why?

I haven't really stopped listening since I bought this book.

I originally found the book on the 7-day loan shelf at the library. I picked it up because I was drawn to the cover. After reading the first paragraph, I realized that this was a sequel and I marched to the card catalogue to find Divergent. I took out both books and read them within the 7 days before I had to return Insurgent.

The world laid out by Veronica Roth is both familiar and fascinating. After I returned the library books I kept asking myself how I would respond to such terrible challenges. I realized that I needed to read them again so I picked up the audible books so I could work out the answer to my questions while driving to work, preparing dinner, or brushing my teeth.

When I was 16 or 17, I'm sure that I would have believed that Roth's world of factions, choices, and consequences could be navigated with confidence in my own intelligence and my grounded, no-nonsense life style. At 45, however, I can be honest enough with myself to say that choosing to completely break with my family to choose a new lifestyle would have been overwhelming. And at middle age, I know that I cannot even begin to imagine how to face the series of losses faced by the main character Tris. So I have to keep listening, because I'm still learning about myself.

And Allegiant is coming to take us all home.

Who was your favorite character and why?

Tris has to continually assess her acceptance of herself and reinvent her place in a changing society, while working through layers of survivor's guilt. The character reads so true you just can't help but examine your own life and motivations. So many authors make the hero and heroine attractive, confident, and exceptionally skilled, while in real life, the bravest of people are often the least noticed. It is wonderful that Roth has given us a character with believable doubts and has tempered the heroine's successes with them.

Have you listened to any of Emma Galvin’s other performances before? How does this one compare?

Emma Galvin breathes life into Tris and the rest of Chicago. She matches her fine performance in Divergent. There are no moments in her delivery that ring untrue.

Did you have an extreme reaction to this book? Did it make you laugh or cry?

Having studied Jewish history for most of my life, I found that I kept drawing comparisons between Tris' reactions to actions she took or did not take and survivors' histories from the Holocaust. The author captured true mental pain and I find that I believed in the character and her motivations all the more because of it.

Any additional comments?

Highly recommended.
