Publisher's summary

Rebecca Soler, narrator of Marissa Meyer's The Lunar Chronicles, returns to narrate this program.

“Narrator Rebecca Soler delivers a take-no-prisoners performance for the third title in The Lunar Chronicles. Her instinctive delivery of Meyer's humor makes the story an addictive listen. Series fans and new listeners will be equally entranced.” —AudioFile Magazine on Cress

Long before she was the terror of Wonderland—the infamous Queen of Hearts—she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love.

Long before she was the terror of Wonderland, she was just a girl who wanted to fall in love. Catherine may be one of the most desired girls in Wonderland, and a favorite of the unmarried King of Hearts, but her interests lie elsewhere. A talented baker, all she wants is to open a shop with her best friend. But according to her mother, such a goal is unthinkable for the young woman who could be the next queen.

Then Cath meets Jest, the handsome and mysterious court joker. For the first time, she feels the pull of true attraction. At the risk of offending the king and infuriating her parents, she and Jest enter into an intense, secret courtship. Cath is determined to define her own destiny and fall in love on her terms. But in a land thriving with magic, madness, and monsters, fate has other plans.

In Heartless, Marissa Meyer's stand-alone novel, the New York Times-bestselling author dazzles us with a prequel to Alice's Adventures in Wonderland.

A truly miserable story

The writing was great, the idea was fabulous, the narrator was one of the best I've ever heard.

That's all the good that can be said about this story. It's one of the most miserable, least satisfying books I've ever had the misfortune to read. It went downhill at the end and I kept thinking, "it can't end like this." Then it got worse and ended.

I'm not just throwing a tantrum because not everyone lived happily ever after. NOBODY lived happily ever after. If I wanted to hear a story about how everyone hates everyone else and is miserable for the rest of their lives I'd watch the news.

Seriously, who is the intended audience? The miserable because they love company?

Do yourself a favor and devour this book

I loved it. My heart hurts but as soon as the last word was read, I dove back in and reread it. The writing, the narration, everything, it was superb!

have

I loved Cinder and the Lunar Chronicles. I enjoyed Heartless though I have never been a fan of Alice in Wonderland.

Perfect narration, but disappointed with the story

This story started out good, but it quickly became too much about the details and less story-telling. I think this story is probably best for those who are big Alice in Wonderland fans. I had not read the book in years so I did not get some of the references or quotes.

I loved the narrator and the Lunar Chronicles, but this book was unfortunately a little painful to finish.

Must read

This was a little confusing in the beginning but developed beautifully. I actually have gone back and listened to my favorite chapters. I love her work and will continue reading it. The narrator is also very very good.

Dissapointing

What disappointed you about Heartless?

I love the Lunar series and really wanted to like this, but there were so many little things that just rankled me and I found myself spiraling into the same anger as the character.

What could Marissa Meyer have done to make this a more enjoyable book for you?

The first half of of the book was reasonably set up but the second half just fell apart for me.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Rebecca Soler?

The actor wasn't bad except that she mispronounced some key words and had a couple very shrill voices for characters that tweaked my eardrums.

If you could play editor, what scene or scenes would you have cut from Heartless?

I don't know about scenes, but I would correct the mispronounced words and adjust the sound.

Wonderful!

I love that Ms. Meyer captured the Red Queen so perfectly. I am 51 yo and I loved this book just as much as my 17 yo student who also read it.

My favorite Marissa Meyer world yet

I loved the world Marissa created, and, as always, she had fantastic characters. I believed the changes the characters went through in their arc, not something I can say for all YA stories.

Believable, engaging, clever - I didn't want it to end. I ended up binge listening through most of one night well into the next morning. I wish this had been longer series; the world, the clever ways old nursery rhymes and fairytale are worked in, and I certainly can't deny an affinity for Jest. You just can't help but be mesmerized by him.

If you liked any of the Lunar chronicles, you'll enjoy this. If you haven't experienced the Lunar Chronicles (you should), this one is right up anyone's alley that enjoyed Six of Crows, Shadow and Bone, and Bone Season (albeit, this is a much lighter tone).

I just want more!!!

Not what I was expecting and that was a good thing

Any additional comments?

This story was not what I was expecting. Marissa Meyer is a wonderful author. She picks great tales and turns them into something modern and magical. I highly recommend this for fans of Alice in Wonderland. However be prepared to feel very emotional during this book. Spend the credit, it is worth it.
