Audible Editor Reviews

Pagan Moore is just having a regular day in her senior year of high school - chatting with her girlfriends at her locker, avoiding the undead "wandering souls" who have stalked her for years - when she encounters a strange boy with smoldering good looks. He is also dead and visible only to her, but unlike the other souls in her life, he can speak. In the first book of Abbi Glines's Existence trilogy, the young adult heroine finds herself torn between love and death. Ashley Litz performs the audiobook with the exaggerated dialogue and emotion befitting melodramatic teenagers - and paranormal romance.

Publisher's Summary

What happens when you're stalked by Death? You fall in love with him, of course. Pagan Moore doesn't cheat Death, but instead, falls in love with him. Seventeen year old Pagan Moore has seen souls her entire life. Once she realized the strangers she often saw walking through walls were not visible to anyone else, she started ignoring them. If she didn't let them know she could see them, then they left her alone. Until she stepped out of her car the first day of school and saw an incredibly sexy guy lounging on a picnic table, watching her with an amused smirk on his face.

Problem is, she knows he's dead. Not only does he not go away when she ignores him, but he does something none of the others have ever done. He speaks. Pagan is fascinated by the soul. What she doesn't realize is that her appointed time to die is drawing near and the wickedly beautiful soul she is falling in love with is not a soul at all. He is Death and he's about to break all the rules.

    "Really Awful Narration"
What could have made this a 4 or 5-star listening experience for you?

Less whining and self pity. Pagan's personality was as grating as the inferior narration. Most of the Glines books offered by Audible have great narrators. Listening to some of the characters in Existence was little better than trying to enjoy screeching nails on a chalkboard.

Would you be willing to try another one of Ashley Litz’s performances?

    No.

    "Helpless character but entertaining performance."
Would you try another book from Abbi Glines and/or Ashley Litz?

Yes from Ashley Litz, I am sorry to say that I will not be able read any more in the Existence series as I couldn't finish the first book.

What was most disappointing about Abbi Glines’s story?

The main character is helpless. She can do nothing for herself and the only redeeming character is the love interest. Overall the interaction between them is unbelievable that any person would continue to be attracted to a girl who complained so much. I kept wanting the main character to stand up for herself, or change her circumstances, but she never did. Also, I was unable to finish when two innocent people burned to death so the main character could satisfy her suspicions about her love interest. If she had stood up for herself or had tried to save lives or do anything with selflessness I would have been more inclined to finish the novel. Not a good role model for teens.

What do you think the narrator could have done better?

I enjoyed the narrator's performance and I will look for her work elsewhere.

Was Existence worth the listening time?

Perhaps not. I didn't finish listening as the story was very contrived and the characters became irritating.

    "Love the Story!"

I really enjoyed this story and the narration is "mostly" good but her Miranda voice makes me wince and her whiny Pagan voice is a bit irritating.

"Story was very good. Narration not so much."
Who was your favorite character and why?

I liked Dank. He was a good mix of bad boy and sexy heart throb.

Would you be willing to try another one of Ashley Litz’s performances?

    No.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

I liked that Dank stayed in the hospital with her and sang to Pagan every night.

    Any additional comments?

I enjoy the story a lot but had to stop listening because the narration was so annoying. I actual went and got the book on my Nook just so I could finish it without having to listen. The story is a little slow to start but it picks up.

    "Good YA Series. Narrator So-So"
Would you listen to Existence again? Why?

Probably. I liked the books which made me want to listen to the series. I liked Dank's and Pagan's voice, her mom and even Leif and Wyatt. But Miranda and Gee's voice are horrendous. Miranda is screechie and sounds like a 10yr old with a whiny tantrum and Gee sounds super old. Like an old, cantankerous cat lady.

What did you like best about this story?

I loved Dankmar and I think the voice used was really good.

What three words best describe Ashley Litz’s performance?

    It was ok.

Was there a moment in the book that particularly moved you?

    Not in this one, no.

    "Worst narrator ever"

I want to start out by saying, I have read this book and really enjoyed it. If the first time I heard the story would have been through audible, I would have hated it.
I've heard some awful narration before, but usually it's because a voice is too old or too young. This woman has no reason to narrate anything.
In all honesty and with no cruelty intended. She has a lisp and she makes her lisp stronger for certain characters. So everyone has a lisp, just to certain degrees.
Also she tries to do a southern accent and it's just a typical, stab in the dark stereotype.

    "Meh..."

Struggled to finish. It was a cute story, but somewhat drawn out. Strange transition going from the Rosemary Beach series to this book. I noticed similarities with the author's writing style, but just wasn't my speed. Didn't leave me wanting more.

    "A shallow, unintriguing read"

The plot was long. The writing seemed immature. The main character was obnoxiously wiser than all around her. If you liked Twilight, then go re-read that.

    "Too juvenile"

The first couple of hours were a struggle. The writing and dialogue are stilted and juvenile, and the narrator tried to make up for it by being too loud and peppy.

"Best Twilight follow up so far"

Being a huge Twilight fan I've read quite a few Twilight-esque books. None are as good. They simply can't be. Twilight was the first original. But most of Twilight still search for that next fix - I think Existence is the best Twilight-eque books I've read. I think most Twilight fans will enjoy it.

    Any additional comments?

Pagan can see lost souls. She ignores them, they don't speak, all is good. Until one day an extremely sexy soul talks to her. Dank. Dank is no ordinary soul though, something that Pagan soon learns, and this is no ordinary love story. Gosh, how I love Dank. Love the writing. Love the story. Just. Love.
