Publisher's summary

Last spring, Nikki Beckett vanished, sucked into an underworld known as the Everneath. Now she’s returned - to her old life, her family, her boyfriend - before she’s banished back to the underworld... this time forever. She has six months before the Everneath comes to claim her, six months for good-byes she can’t find the words for, six months to find redemption, if it exists.

Nikki longs to spend these precious months forgetting the Everneath and trying to reconnect with her boyfriend, Jack, the person most devastated by her disappearance - and the one person she loves more than anything. But there’s just one problem: Cole, the smoldering immortal who enticed her to the Everneath in the first place, has followed Nikki home. Cole wants to take over the throne in the underworld and is convinced Nikki is the key to making it happen. And he’ll do whatever it takes to bring her back, this time as his queen.

As Nikki’s time on the Surface draws to a close and her relationships begin slipping from her grasp, she is forced to make the hardest decision of her life: find a way to cheat fate and remain on the Surface with Jack or return to the Everneath and become Cole’s queen.

Everneath is a captivating story of love, loss, and immortality from debut author Brodi Ashton.

I really wanted to like it.

Would you recommend this book to a friend? Why or why not?

Not really, nothing about the story really hooked me. I wanted to like it but just couldn't get into it. I kept waiting for it to just be over.

Would you be willing to try another book from Brodi Ashton? Why or why not?

Maybe, but not from this series. I just didn't care for this story line

What didn’t you like about Amy Rubinate’s performance?

I feel like she was whining the whole time even when she wasn't trying to.

Was Everneath worth the listening time?

Not really.

Amazing

Wonderful story of true love. Amazing twist on Greek mythology. I loved it! Easy and fun read for teens!
But still moving throughout.

Enjoyable

Would you recommend this audiobook to a friend? If so, why?

Yes, good story

Any additional comments?

It toke me a little bit to get into the book - but once the premise of the story was established and the story really got going, I enjoyed it. I will definitely be getting the next book in the series.

It can be slow...

This book wasn???t for you, but who do you think might enjoy it more?

Honestly... I really don't know... mostly I just thought it was slow and somewhat rambling, particularly in the beginning, but most everyone else loves it, so I guess if you like the other books in this genre (although I generally do... so take that for what it's worth), you might like it.

What did you like best about this story?

I gave the story 4 stars. Why? The mythology was interesting and the STORY, when I finally got to it (honestly, there isn't much until after the halfway point) was good.

Who would you have cast as narrator instead of Amy Rubinate?

I have no idea... but pretty much anyone else from the books I've listened to...

What reaction did this book spark in you? Anger, sadness, disappointment?

Just annoyance for the most part... it was somewhat of a love/hate relationship...

Easiest to just see below for details...

Any additional comments?

I know my stars are a bit inconsistent... two stars overall, but four stars for the story? Here's the thing... the narrator is so breathy that I was driven to distraction. She's not the worst I've heard, and I suppose her style fits the story, but I honestly thought she just made the beginning of the book slower than it already is.

My main issue with this book is that it could have been edited down by probably 50 to 100 pages (no, I didn't physically read it, but I've read enough of these types of books to know how long it is and how long it *should* have been). The author describes the most inane acts. At one point, the main character tells her little brother to

Too much angst.

2 stars. Way too angsty but with no real heart.
Not only was the angst factor high. It was misplaced angst. IMO it should have been directed at the fact that in a very short time shades were coming to suck her back down to the underworld and suck her dry. Not at whether, jack the cute quarterback still liked her. As thstory progressed the connection with jack took on more relevance to her fate, but still...
I like retellings of myths and the Orpheus/Eurydice is one of my favorites. Also the cover of this book is beautiful and appealed to me. However, It was a struggle to get through it. I began with the audiobook which I didn't enjoy. The flat lifeless tone of the reader was off putting even though it matched the flat, lifeless tone of the main character. I also found it difficult to drve while constantly rolling my eyes. So I switched to the print version to finish. Part of the problem may be that it suffers by being part one of a trilogy, perhaps if the author had been able to tell a complete story instead of just dragging out part one to the required 350ish pages it would have worked better. Remember, it's a retelling, which means its already been told. So most folks know the general direction the story will take. The ending was exactly as suspected and was just a set up for book two, which I won't be reading.

Not for Me

I really didn’t enjoy this book. I tried to get into it, and I normally enjoy this genre, but this book fell short in every area. The plot was weak, the story just didn’t seem to be well written and the characters fell flat in my estimation. I know a lot of others liked the book, but it just wasn’t for me.
