Publisher's summary

It is the summer of 1868, and Sherlock Holmes is 14. On break from boarding school, he is staying with eccentric strangers - his uncle and aunt - in their vast house in Hampshire. When two local people die from symptoms that resemble the plague, Holmes begins to investigate what really killed them, helped by his new tutor, an American named Amyus Crowe. So begins Sherlock’s true education in detection, as he discovers the dastardly crimes of a brilliantly sinister villain of exquisitely malign intent.

Entertaining From Start To Finish

What a great little “read”...
Lightweight but thoroughly enjoyable.
I’m sure it’s geared toward YR... as there were many tidbits of information
knowledge and lessons peppered throughout the book... great way to keep learning during vacation for YR

A maturing Holmes

Building Holmes from a young teen...adding experiences and background to explain his idiosyncratic nature. I never would have considered the national background the author had for his tutor. Different enough to be interesting, there was some repetition in the story as written that may have been unneeded. Overall a good teen book.

Very well written.

No slow spots; exciting; expertly written. Sherlock uses his brain but also is able to handle himself in a fight.

Hope, then disappointment

Would you try another book from Andrew Lane and/or Daniel Weyman?

Depends.

What was your reaction to the ending? (No spoilers please!)

Disappointing. Excellent beginning. Then just one chase after another at the end.

What about Daniel Weyman’s performance did you like?

Good enunciation.

Could you see Death Cloud being made into a movie or a TV series? Who should the stars be?

Don't know.

Any additional comments?

Author showed talent in depicting young Sherlock and family tensions. After that, fell apart.
