Publisher's summary

It is the summer of 1868, and Sherlock Holmes is 14. On break from boarding school, he is staying with eccentric strangers - his uncle and aunt - in their vast house in Hampshire. When two local people die from symptoms that resemble the plague, Holmes begins to investigate what really killed them, helped by his new tutor, an American named Amyus Crowe. So begins Sherlock’s true education in detection, as he discovers the dastardly crimes of a brilliantly sinister villain of exquisitely malign intent.

Young Homes is a marvel. A joy to read

The historical background is so descriptive I felt like I was standing next to young Mr. Holmes. Exciting, not slow paced as others. A pleasure to see the young Sherlock and how he develops his ideas, molds his future

Excellent!

A Jules Verne resolution but up to that point it's pure Sherlock. You will find many precursors to the future Holmes' life and philosophies and the characters, especially Mattie, are rich and original although the latter has a bit of Huckleberry Finn in him.

Overall, a great listen!

Ok

I loved the narration, but i disliked the romantic subplot. Other than that, it was not completely Sherlock Holmes cannon

Pleasant listen

YA genre. Familiar tropes or styles. I enjoyed how the frivolity and furtiveness of a teenage brain is represented. The frequent endangerment did get tiresome and young Sherlock wasn’t particularly talented. There are many parallels to the Harry Potter series, especially co-characters (although Ron is upgraded to Huck Finn perhaps).
If you are interested in speculation about the childhood of famous literary figures, Lamb by Christopher Moore is recommended.
This was easy to listen to if you like Harry Potter type action.

Not Arthur Conan Doyle, but who cares?

Where does Death Cloud rank among all the audiobooks you’ve listened to so far?

Near the top

What does Daniel Weyman bring to the story that you wouldn’t experience if you just read the book?

excellent narrator

Any additional comments?

This is excellent family fair. Fast paced and very interesting. The ending is complete, but sets up for many sequels which I hope come soon.

Enjoyable read.

This was an enjoyable read. I am not familiar with the Sherlock Holmes stories & history. Therefore I don't know if it does any injustice to the historical works. As for a lite hearted mystery it fits the bill nicely. The narrator does a very fine job. The story is about teenagers entangled in a murder mystery and still as an adult I enjoyed the story. I didn't find it to be juvenile or childish or lacking entertainment value. Not just for the young but the young hearted as well.
