Publisher's summary

An up-to-the-minute survival guide from the creator of Survivorman explores how to stay alive in the wild, in the jungle, in the desert, and in urban disasters.

From the sun-scorched sands of the Kalahari to the snake-infested jungles of the Amazon, Les Stroud has made a life of surviving in the harshest - and most remote - regions on Earth.

Now, the creator, producer, and host of the hit television program Survivorman transfers his decades of knowledge and experience to the audiobook Survive!, a practical guide that gives everyday listeners a no-nonsense look at the real world of survival.

Stroud offers listeners the essential skills and tactics necessary to endure in any corner of the globe, along with a wealth of insider information born of his own experiences in the outdoors and unavailable in any other book. Listeners will learn:

  • How to make a survival shelter and why a lean-to is largely a waste of time.
  • Why survival kits are important and why you should make your own.
  • Where to find water and why drinking contaminated water is sometimes warranted.
  • How to locate and trap small animals and why the notion of tracking and hunting large game is largely a pipe dream.

Whether seasoned in the outdoor arts or new to adventuring, all listeners will learn something from Survive! Stroud's many colorful anecdotes and cut-to-the-chase philosophy not only make for an entertaining listen, but also enhance anyone's ability to focus on the main goal when everything else has gone wrong - survival.

Les Stroud - THE SURVIVORMAN

One of the leading experts in survival. If you want Hollywood (and usually the wrong thing to do) stick to Bear Grylls' "Man Verus Wild". I respect him too, but he sometimes gives bad (and even dangerous) advice to get the ratings/viewers. Les Stroud always gives and demonstrates, real-life actual survival advice based on his extensive knowledge and experience to get you back alive. I learned so much from the show that he pioneered called "Survivorman" (one that many copied later) that I bought both the audio and paperback copy of his book to use for reference. Les was always solo on his show with no camera crew or Hollywood set up. His book follows about the same format as the Air Force Survival Book that I used in the AF and now teach from in my survival class.

My first ever review

I listen to audiobooks all the time as I spend many hours on rural roads. This is the first I felt I had to review; it’s that good. Les is the real deal and if you have spent much time in the outdoors it is easy to tell. As a professional wildlife biologist and forester I have spent decades in the woods in all types of weather and difficult situations. I wish I had been able to read or listen to his books years ago, but as they say it’s never too late and that is true. I grin every time I think of his “Nature is Neutral” so true ! I always use Aldo L. “ Nature is neither kind nor cruel , only indifferent”. I am gonna steal Les’s quote, I like it better. J.J. McCool.

Great Basic survival book with one tiny issue

Les mentions "gimicky" water proof matches. YES Storm matches come in cardboard boxes...most matches do. Exotac and many other companies now produce high quality water proof match carriers with space for EXTRA strikers included in the boxes. The UCO Stormproof TitanMatch produces a very hot flame that can be dunked in a glass of water, pulled out and it will relight itself like a prank birthday candle. Exotac also makes a refillable waterproof , evaporation proof lighter that uses regular lighter fluid like a Zippo, and can use Zippo "flints" ...as he said, Technology changes, time marches on.

Very well done overall.

great book to read and have with you in the woods

I have read pretty much every survival and Bushcraft book out there. this is one of my favorites and has been for a long time. right up there with the SAS manual and Tom Brown's Field guide. good mixture of knowledge and stories with pictures just a good all-around survival book to add to the collection
