Publisher's summary

Can a gentle robot win the fight for humanity's last hope?

Before the Robot Uprising, Block the CleanerBot dutifully followed his programming as part of a hotel cleaning crew. Now in the aftermath of the AI Apocalypse that annihilated the world, he tries to simply do his job, avoiding the dangerous SoldierBots who wage war on the last human survivors.

But when Block discovers a human infant, his surprise attachment to the girl compels him to protect her while traveling across the metal infested wastelands of America to a safe haven. Without his help, the abandoned baby could die before they reach safety. When he encounters Nova - a surly soldier who becomes an unlikely ally - they must tackle the biggest challenge of their lives.

Together, they face mortal danger from bands of scavengers, militaristic SoldierBots, and Combat Mechs. A cyborg Bounty Hunter that will stop at nothing to find Block and the child - an infant who holds the key to humanity’s future.

If you enjoy robots with a heart like WALL-E plus the action-packed adventure of The Mandalorian, then you’ll love the first book of this thrilling post-apocalyptic sci-fi series.

Very YA

Some of the world building made no sense. Why would humans create a cleaning bot with a mobile face? The assembly bot, too, physically smiles. Why not just a speaker like C3-PO’s? The economics don’t make sense.

The editor missed a lot of redundancy as well. If we don’t know who a bot/person is by the last chapters, the reader probably isn’t still reading.

I finished the book so I won’t return it, but I was overall disappointed with this book.

Loved it.

I’m waiting for Book 2 - Steel Defenders. It’s kind of prophetic that AIs are taking over.

A promising beginning for a series.

At first I wasnt sure this was going to hold my attention and be a good "read" to pass the time. I was pleasantly surprised to buy into the characters emotionally, from the beginning. Thanks for the first of what I hope to be a great series!

Interesting

This book was entertaining and imaginative with some interesting characters. Many of the situations the characters found themselves in were too far out there to be believable even for fiction. Overall, it was a decent read. I was pretty aggravated that even the robots used curse words. It would have been a better book without the profanity.

Entertaining

Steel Guardian is a fairly straightforward and enjoyable book. Block the Cleaner Bot feels existentially fulfilled while cleaning hotels. After the AI Apocalypse, hotels aren't exactly thriving, and human survivors are at war with SoldierBots. Bummer.

One day, Block finds a human infant and is tasked with getting the girl to the safety 700 miles away. He has to learn to care for the child, feed it, and keep it clean. He gets help from Nova - a human soldier who becomes an unlikely ally.

The story is simple to follow and quick to read. It lacks nuance in world-building and characterization but works well as an easy and entertaining read. All in all, a pleasant experience. Will I follow the series? Not sure, but if I'll be looking for something easy and entertaining, I'll definitely consider it.
