Publisher's summary

Renowned novelist and screenwriter Mark Frost turns his eye for golf to an event so famous that it’s grown to the stuff of legend. In 1956, a casual bet between two millionaires eventually pitted two of the greatest golfers of the era—Byron Nelson and Ben Hogan—against top amateurs: Harvie Ward and Ken Venturi. Frost recounts this dramatic tale from start to finish, detailing the match that vaulted golf out of the shadows and into the national spotlight.

Critic reviews

"Frost has a penchant toward the florid, but he captures an elusive magic in this improbable matchup and what it meant for those who played and witnessed it." ( Publishers Weekly)

Great Story

The history the author folds in is fascinating. Telling all the life stories about the players, instigators and the history of Montery gave the story depth that I didn't expect.

Must Read

This was a great read, not just about golf but also about a time period in America, 1935 to 1955. The author tracked the lives of several persons, some prosper and live long happy healthy lives why other end badly in self destruction and despair. Also tells the history of the Monterey Peninsula.

Heartwarming story masterfully narrated

What I know about golf would fit comfortably in a demitasse spoon but I loved this book. With a few online searches I was able to get definitions of some of the terms and an overview of the Cypress Point golf course (which is gorgeous!). Thank you Audible for the sale, otherwise I would have never considered this book.

The course, the match-up between the characters and the description of the holes and the architects who built it were wonderfully described and masterly narrated. A truly heartwarming story of legendary men.

Great history lesson, many biographies in one.

I am not a golfer but enjoy it as a spectator. I'm 58 and remember hearing many of these names throughout life. I appreciated learning of the game's early origins, and having a suspenseful story embedded. If you like history, biographies, and golf, you may enjoy this book.

A gem, fantastic, a must history lesson 4 golfers

I've listened to 3 Mark Frost books in a row now, "The Greatest Game Ever Played", "Grand Slam" and now this little nugget. As a life long golfer I can't give enough praise to Mr. Frost's knowledge and style. In addition, all three narrators were great too. I simply have no complaints, and I have listened to a lot of audio books where I just grind through them hoping they just end already. Not with these 3 books. I was sad they all came to an end

The Match

This book is an excellent history of the lives of the golfers and also the courses in the Monterey Peninsula. All golfers should read this. I was disappointed when it ended.
