Publisher's summary

If you want to discover the captivating history of Sparta, then pay attention....

Sparta is one of the first names that comes to mind when we think about the ancient world. And this is for good reason. After its founding sometime in the 10th century BCE, Sparta soon rose to be one of the most powerful city-states in not only the Greek but the entire ancient world.

Its unique government, which featured two kings and an elected senate, helped it achieve relative political stability early on in its history, and Spartan leaders were able to use this to expand their power and influence in the region surrounding Sparta as well as the rest of the Peloponnesian Peninsula.

Perhaps the most significant achievement in all of Spartan history, though, was their defeat of the Athenians in the Peloponnesian War. This conflict, which lasted roughly 30 years, put the two greatest Greek city-states of the time, Athens and Sparta, up against one another, and the result, a Spartan victory, helped to reshape the entire ancient world.

In Spartans: A Captivating Guide to the Fierce Warriors of Ancient Greece, Including Spartan Military Tactics, the Battle of Thermopylae, How Sparta Was Ruled, and More, you will discover topics such as:

  • Who Were the Spartans
  • The Growth of Spartan Power: The Messenian Wars
  • A Growing Rivalry with Athens: The Greco-Persian Wars
  • Victory over Athens: The Birth of the Spartan Empire
  • Spartan Hegemony, the Corinthian War, and Sparta’s Decline
  • Spartan Government, Military, and Society
  • And much, much more!

Nice History book

The other main issue was weapons and shields used by Spartan, Greeks and other tribe soldiers was so much better which made the kill ratio so high in their favor.

GREAT GUID

In the end when Sparta was broken by Thebes no one seems to have wondered how such a tiny community had been so influential and so feared. Never has the world seen a comparable state of such small population wielding such power with the exception, perhaps, of Israel or Singapore.

interesting

Full of historical facts how Spartans become the strongest warriors in history. I've learned how political and social changes affects structures and traditions of Spartan society. The author made it easy to read and understand.

The Rest of the Story

One of the best aspects of this volume is that THE AUTHOR discusses in detail the later Spartans, an area most students either avoid or forget once they get past the Theban hegemony in the middle of the 4th century.

Ghosts of heroes

I frequently thought of Herodotus' statement that future civilizations would have a hard time believing that the Spartans were once such a powerful city-state based on buildings, monuments, written evidence, etc that they left behind. This is why I wanted to read more on ancient Sparta. I think there is room still for a better book on Sparta, perhaps more reflective.

Love it

Knowledge about the historical events from this record was more accurate than the History Channel 'Spartan' document but the views are a bit odd. The 5 stars are base on the information which is the most important part because many of the films deceive the pieces (people).
