Publisher's summary

With the first world war raging across Europe, Shackleton's expedition to cross the South Pole became trapped by ice. Their ship, the Endurance, was crushed and the men were forced to survive in and escape from one of the world's most hostile environments.

An incredible mission and an incredible escape. This is the story of one of the greatest sea journeys ever made.

Escape from the South

In amazingly dispassionate but evocative prose Ernest Shackleton describes his effort to cross the South Pole, the loss of his ship Endurance and incredible two-year 1500-mile journey across the ice and polar seas to reach safety. It is by far the most stirring fear of courage and leadership. The only inhuman losses of the 28 men were some tied to frostbite. But the tale also includes the adventures of the other half of the expedition which laid supply depots in the far side of the ice cap for Shackleton to complete is arduous trek. Here too only three men died from the motivations of glaciers and blizzards of incredible force with minimal food and protection.
A thrilling, stirring and icing narrative of the human spirit to carry on against truly hopeless odds -- and survive!
