Short Stories for Japanese Learners: You Can Read Japanese Level 2, The Red Candle offers fun and engaging beginner-friendly stories to help you easily read Kanji and more!

Japanese language learners often struggle with reading Japanese on a native level because most books in the market provide very formal options that don’t really get into the heart of what a local speaker should sound or speak like.

But that’s all about to change!

In this comprehensive guide, you will:

  • Enjoy 10 Japanese short stories in different genres: Every story has English translations to help learners enjoy and immerse themselves without struggling with vocabulary and grammar
  • Get a complete vocabulary set: From questions to answers and their translations, every story is laid out to maximize your learning and enrich your experience—unlike all the other books in the market
  • Understand and appreciate Japanese culture better: With stories in casual settings and dialogues, you will get an immersive and informative experience without burning yourself out
  • Leverage Japanese vocabulary the right way: All Kanji and Katakana have "furigana" so that you can focus on the story, while words on the vocabulary list come with "romaji" so you can practice proper pronunciation

And so much more!

Super impressive and delightful!

I am probably a level 0 and this book is a level 2, even so I really like this audio book. For starters, the narrator’s voice is very pleasant to listen to and she is very clear and expressive. The story is not boring to listen to, despite my lack of vocabulary to understand the story. I listened to the first chapter so far. The narrator read the story in Japanese at a slow enough speed, but not unnaturally slow. Then pronounced vocabulary twice, the second time enunciating syllables which I appreciated. Followed by multiple choice questions. Then answers in both Japanese and English! Then to my pleasant surprise she read the story again, alternating between reading in Japanese then translating into English. So I give this audiobook five stars and will listen to it on my commute.

Great for Japanese listening practice

I already have a paper copy of Short Stories for Japanese Learners Level 2, but I bought the audio book too because the practice will help me develop my listening skills.

I love that the variety of genres in the short stories, too. It’s great to read content that is interesting to me as an adult learner, like sci-fi.

Perfect for Beginners

What I enjoyed the most about this Japanese audio book is that every word is pronounced clearly and slow enough in order to follow easily, especially when coupled with the Kindle version.
In addition an excellent oral English translation is included.
Arigato !!!

Exactly What I Was Searching For!

This is a perfect addition to any Japanese language learning library for beginners and upper-level beginners.
All too often the kana is followed with romaji throughout countless entry-level and intermediate Japanese language learning books and writings.
Not here!
Each story has only the kana text while the Kanji has furigana above to help improve context, pronunciation and memory. Such features (without the use of romaji) are key for improving Japanese reading skills during any learning level. Each story is followed up with a vocabulary list, questions to answer and simplified English translation breakdown of the content. The stories are concise, fun, engaging and entertaining.

The audio-book helps immensely with speech timing, proper native pitch-accent and conjugation patterns. Ayano Yamamoto has a gentle and welcoming voice that makes listening pleasurable and simple to understand. She speaks slowly enough to aid learners with sounds of each word and to follow along without difficulty or losing place in text. The speed of the audio is easily adjusted to suit the needs of the listener.

I highly recommend this publication and audio version to anyone who has the desire and passion to learn the beautiful language of Japanese and wish to improve reading comprehension. This type of reading will help relieve any boredom or strain that can come from the constant usage of standard textbooks. Much satisfaction will be achieved when learning goals are met and this book will help learners reach such goals.

Note: Overall I give the publication 4.5 stars and the Audiobook 5 stars. I would give the printed book 5 stars if it reads right to left like the ones printed in Japan. This would have made the book read and "feel" even more native and authentic. Perhaps I'm being a little too picky now. ;)

Very Helpful and Easy to understand

The read through of this book is very well done. I already loved the book, and now being able to hear it being read by a native Japanese person makes it even better. The same person that reads the Japanese parts also reads the English. However she must have worked very hard on her accent, but it really is almost unnoticeable. She even reads the Questions and answers. I was not expecting this, but it was welcomed all the same. Having this read aloud is a great way to (Hopefully) get rid of my accent as well.

Fantastic Audiobook ! :)

Fantastic Audiobook ! :)

I enjoyed the ebook, and this audiobook is a perfect compliment.

Each story is read very clearly and at a slow pace. After this, the vocabulary list and questions and answers for the quiz are read out. Finally, the story is read out again at a more moderate pace along with the english translation.
One thing I noticed is that the words are spoken slowly and clearly to make sure we can learn the correct pronunciation,
which is excellent ! :)

This is a great resource for improving one's Japanese listening skills. The stories are fun, interesting and unique ! :)

Fantastic ! :)

Perfect for Japanese learners

I loved this collection of short stories. I'm about ten months into my Japanese learning journey, and this was perfect for my level. The audio was excellent. The stories were read slowly and clearly, which was so helpful. I wish there were more volumes of stories, though. I would definitely buy the next book. I had to ration myself to one story a morning to make it last, lol.
