Publisher's summary

When Schuyler Rummel-Hudson was 18 months old, a question about her lack of speech by her pediatrician set in motion a journey that continues today. When she was diagnosed with bilateral perisylvian polymicrogyria (an extremely rare neurological disorder), her parents were given a name for the monster that had been stalking them from doctor to doctor, and from despair to hope, and back again.

Once they knew why Schuyler couldn't speak, they needed to determine how to help her learn. They took on educators and society to give their beautiful daughter a voice, and in the process learned a thing or two about fearlessness, tenacity, and joy.

More than a memoir of a parent dealing with his child's disability, Schuyler's Monster is a tale of a little girl who silently teaches a man filled with self-doubt how to be the father she needs.

Must-read for medical parents & those who ❤them

Schuyler's story, and that of her parents, will resonate with any family who has experienced the joy, fear, frustration, and triumph of faith that comes with parenting a child with special needs. Robert Rummel-Hudson is heartbreakingly honest in sharing their journey.

An Amazing Journey. Definitely on my top five list

This book came up in my feed as similar to other books I'd purchased and I would say this one is hands down a first class winner. It is a brutally honest portrayal of a father's journey from who he was, to who life's circumstances molded him to be. There genuinely are moments in life that either make us or break us--and sometimes both; however, the journey he guides the reader through shows how it simply shaped him because he was willing to be molded by his circumstances because his love for his daughter was greater than the fear he felt. Having been a parent with more than one child who has faced extreme courage and adversity, though not in the same areas as Schuyler, I strongly recommend this for any parent(s) who have a child with any adversity regardless the size of the child's monster. The narrator did an outstanding job portraying the author's voice as a regular American Dad, which gives the story a comfortable feel like a faded pair of blue jeans. The author did an amazing job of relaying his emotions, both ups and downs, and leaves you wondering how they are all doing now. Hopefully eventually there will be a sequel. A highly recommended read worth listening to.
